Ho’onani. Say it with me, ho-o-na-ni. It just sounds pleasant, doesn’t it? In Hawaiian, Ho’o means “let us do together” and Nani means “beautiful.” Therefore, the phrase ho’onani bears a significant message for the modern times we live in. “Let us keep Hawai’i beautiful” is a motto that locals and visitors alike should take to heart and champion. Back in the 1960’s, there was an environmental campaign on the mainland called “Give a Hoot, Don’t Pollute” that never really caught on in Hawai’i. Hopefully now, we’ll heed the call of Ho’onani and not only Recycle, but also Reduce and Reuse. Let’s keep Hawai’i beautiful.
