Hawai’i’s original beer is back! The tradition of brewing beer on the Islands began with Honolulu’s Don Francisco de Paula Marin all the way back in 1812. The tropical weather of the South Pacific combined with the laid back Aloha lifestyle made this cold, sudsy beverage the perfect refreshment for locals and watermen alike. In 1854, Hawaii’s first full-scale brewery, Honolulu Brewing & Malting Company, was established. Demand for beer kept growing and in 1897 the Hawai’i Brewing Company introduced Primo Beer. Hawai’i would never be the same. Though Primo would change hands many times – once bought by Schlitz and then by Stroh – at one point, it proudly claimed 70% of the Hawaiian market. In fact, during the 1960s, it consistently advertised in programs for Oahu’s massive International Surf Championships at Makaha. Now the beer with the unique flavor and aroma that comes from a touch of raw Hawaiian cane sugar is available again. Not only are locals and visitors excited, but we at Malibu Shirts are proud to carry Primo apparel and celebrate its long history.
