Few names in Hawaiian surfing stand out more than the name Aikau. With brothers Clyde and Eddie Aikau being two of the more prominent representatives of Hawaiian surfing through much of the late 60’s and decades to follow. While older brother Eddie was tragically killed in a boating accident in 1978, Clyde continued to have a highly successful professional career, winning the Duke Kahanamoku classic in 1973, and the 1986 Quicksilver big wave contest in memory of his brother Eddie. Clyde has continued to be an active participant in the surfing community, with his Pure Hawaiian brand which teaches lessons and offers rentals on Waikiki Beach. If anyone embodies what “Pure Hawaiian” means, it is without question Clyde Aikau.
