Gecko’s have been inhabiting the Hawaiian Islands for an estimated 1500 years, originally hitching their rides on Polynesian canoes headed for The Islands. These colorful creatures have long been associated with Hawaii’s image and in 1979, an authentic surf brand launched on Maui featuring both the name and the image of the Gecko. Gecko Hawaii exploded in popularity in the 1980’s gaining a loyal fanbase from their quality apparel that focused on a surfing lifestyle. The brand was so successful that it was quickly picked up by major national retailers like Sears, JC Penny, Target and more. What began as a humble brand based on a tiny reptile had taken it’s authentic message and spread to a national and international audience. Gecko has done what few surf brands have done and managed to stand the test of time, still churning out great products to this day.
