Formed in Los Angeles in 1965 by Bob Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the American television series The Monkees, which aired from 1966–1968, the musical acting quartet was composed of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork, and Englishman Davy Jones. Initially the show depicted them as an imaginary band striving to be The Beatles, but they soon took on a level of fame for themselves and got more time to tour when not filming. Their first full live concert was held at the Honolulu International Center Arena on December 3, 1966. The day before the show they visited radio station KPOI to promote the concert and this turned into a tradition for subsequent cities while on tour.
