Back before surfing was declared a taboo by European missionaries in the 18th century, surfing was a privilege reserved for the ruling class, or Ali'i. Over the years surfing became popular around the world with guys and girls both young and old, but large scale surfboard production did not exist in Hawaii. Capitalizing on revolutionary materials like fiberglass and foam, Chuck Shipman Jr. took over an abandoned warehouse, near where Ala Moana Shopping Center stands today, and made it into a gathering place for surfing’s youth. Ali'i Surfboards became a mecca where the best surfers in the world converged to fix dings, talk story and further the sport of surfing.
