Among the most influential figures in the design and development of the modern longboard is Steve Walden.  Walden, who grew up surfing in Southern California, began shaping boards for himself and his friends, earning himself a spot as a shaper for Greek Surfboards in 1968 at the age of 20.  The following year he opened Walden Surfboards, quickly becoming one of the largest longboards manufacturers in the Country.  In 1972, Walden took his talents to Hawaii where he continued to manufacture his own brand as well as designing and shaping for prominent Hawaiian brands such as Lightning Bolt, and Hawaiian Island Creations.  At this time when many shapers were abandoning longboard designs in favor of the booming shortboard market, Steve Walden took up the challenge of working to give longboards the maneuverability and speed that shortboards offered.  For over 4 decades now, Walden has continued to revolutionize the world of surfboard design through an ongoing commitment to thinking outside the box and challenging the notions of how a surfboard can and should perform.
