Fans went wild when the renowned National Scholastic Surfing Association secured nine of the ten competitor spots in the United States’ 1981 World Amateur Surfing Championships. In 1979, the United States Surfing Federation had unified six independent U.S. amateur surfing organizations, and NSSA reluctantly agreed to join. This elite group dominated the 1981 World Amateur Surfing Championships when they competed in Trestles, California. The United States World Surfing Association brings together the best surfers across the United States to compete in a new location with a new beach and fresh set of waves each year. In 1979, surfers rode the Texas shores, 1980 was Hawaii, and 1981, Trestles, California was where competitors surfed the swell.
