The use of lifeguards on California beaches began in the 1930's in response to a drastic increase in drownings as more and more people were going to the beach for recreation.  The state park system began to develop the program over the following decades, ultimately forming the California State Lifeguard Association in the late 60's.  At this time a formal statewide training program was created, based at Huntington Beach in Southern California.  Today, the lifeguards serving California State Parks comprise one of the largest professional lifeguard services in the world, annually performing more than 10,000 swimmer rescues.
