In 1921, Charles A. Herrman established the Penn Yan Boat Company, manufacturing a wide variety of boating products, including canoes, rowboats, sailboats, and powerboats. Although originally constructed of wood, the company switched to fiberglass in the 1960's. Penn Yan catered to a wide range of customers as it offered ski and racing boats for the thrill-seekers, yachts for the relaxed, and functional fishing boats for the commercial fishers. German-native Herrman was a master of boating innovation and he became revered for his Tunnel Drive invention. In order to achieve higher boat speeds while maintaining hull stability, the tunnel drive pattern used a cavity that partly covered the drive shaft and propeller. In 1979, Penn Yan was sold, and though it achieved great success in the world of boating, its doors came to a permanent close in 2001. Penn Yan’s love for ocean exploration and enjoyment lives on today as Penn Yan’s vintage Commander and Captivator boats remain.

Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic  was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.”  The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore.  At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni.  From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Kimo’s talented artwork showcases the astounding natural beauty of Hawaii’s landscape and the marine animals inhabiting Hawaii’s shorelines. Passionate about preserving the environment and ocean life, Kimo paints with rich, expressive hues unique to Hawaii, thus incorporating a surreal quality into his work. Kimo shares the love many feel for the exceptional beauty of Hawaiian nature and strives for this beauty to continue. Hanauma Bay is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations on Oahu but also functions to preserve the natural beauty unique to Hawaii. In 1967, Hanauma Bay was claimed by the State Division of Fish and Game as a Marine Protected Area, meaning everything from marine organisms to sand, was protected. A group of volunteers began teaching visitors about coral reef conservation, providing insight on ways to help preserve the precious sea life. An additional kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. This islet and the surrounding 77 underwater acres were announced a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, thus protected by the federal government. Molokini’s unique shape was created during World War II when the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice. Today, the exquisite islet offers a wide variety of corals and marine organisms inhabiting its sea life sanctuary.

Today, the three-hour drive to Hana is a popular tourist attraction, famous for its rich cultural history and exquisite natural landscapes. In 1962, the Hana Highway formed when 52 miles of land were paved to connect Kahului in east Maui to Hana. Although 56 one-lane bridges and 617 curves in the road make the highway a famed tourist attraction, the historical sites along the drive are a window into Maui’s cultural past. Popular sites include the cave where the wife of Hawaii’s King Kamehameha I, Queen Ka’ahumanu, was birthed, and the grave and home of Charles Lindbergh, the first American aviator to fly the world’s first transatlantic flight. Beautiful waterfalls, tropical gardens, unique Hawaiian shops, and intriguing historical sites reveal the renowned beauty of Maui along the road to Hana.
