In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. The Hawaiian Masters was conceived and developed by Fred Hemmings three years after he won the 1968 World Surfing Championships. Held annually in December, the competition is home to one of the world's most explosive tubes breaking just 75 yards off the shore, allowing judges and spectators alike to have a great view. With a higher emphasis on tuberiding than other events, the competition became known as Pipeline Masters and has long been regarded as the world's top surfing contest. Hawaiian pro surfer Jeff Hackman won the first event in 1971, along with the $500 purse, and Pipeline legend Gerry Lopez won the next two years.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989.  The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven.  Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw.  In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum.  A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

As the name suggests, Hawaii Country Club is in fact the oldest public golf course on the island of Oahu. The three-fingered Shaka greeting widely used today among Hawaiians and others in the surfing community originated from a multitude of stories sharing a common theme: warmth and welcome when greeting another. One story says a man named Hamana Kalili, who worked at the sugar plantation, was involved in an unfortunate accident which severed his three middle fingers. Another legend tells of Tutu Hamana, a great Ali’i (chief) in the court and a man filled with aloha and kindness. When the guest would leave, Tutu Hamana would wave goodbye with his old, bent hand and the people, out of aloha, would wave back just like he did, with their 3 middle fingers down like shaka.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30 foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden.

From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. Honolulu surfer and restaurant supplier John Lind created the winter contest, sponsored by the Waianae Lions Club and Waikiki Surf Club, to attract the world’s best surfers.

Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as  “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. Edward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades.  In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies.  That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co.  In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic.  If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].”  The name stuck.

A kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. This islet and the surrounding 77 underwater acres were announced a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, thus protected by the federal government. Molokini’s unique shape was created during World War II when the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice. Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

The beloved animated character Gumby was first created in the early 1950s by Art Clokey, who had been developing his clay animation techniques at the University of Southern California. In 1955, Clokey created a pilot featuring Gumby, which was immediately picked up by executives at NBC, who featured a Gumby short called ”Gumby on the Moon” on the Howdy Doody show in 1956. Gumby became an instant hit, and in 1957, Gumby had his own show that ran through the ‘50s and ‘60s. Gumby was later revived in 1988, with a new set of adventures, once again following Gumby and his friends through a variety of locations and historical times. In one episode in the original series, Gumby and Pokey believe they are stowing away in a box headed for Hawaii.
