Hawaiian Airlines has a long and storied history. Incorporated in 1929 under the name Inter-Island Airways Ltd, our original fleet was comprised of two eight-passenger Sikorsky S-38 amphibian planes. From those modest beginnings, we’ve grown to be Hawaii’s biggest and longest-serving airline with more than 160 jet flights daily between the Hawaiian Islands and over 240 daily flights system wide.

The Kona Inn was built by the Inter-Island Steamship Navigation Company in 1928 as a means to expand the growing Hawaiian tourism market to the Kona area.  Featuring a stunning setting on the coast, the Kona Inn  was originally a 20 room hotel that featured a saltwater pool, tennis courts, and a cocktail lounge.  At the time Kona was a highly remote destination and the Inn wasn't even able to have fresh water piped in until 1953.  Still, the Kona Inn remained a popular destination for adventurous visitors, and in particular, fisherman.  The Inn served as the unofficial headquarters for the billfish tournament as Kona developed a reputation as one of the premier marlin fishing areas in the world.  The Kona Inn stopped housing guests in 1976, but still remains a popular destination, largely due to the restaurant that opened in 1979 offering unmatched sunset views, and a premier dining experience.

Starting in 1927 with a vision, some single engine aircraft and a few trans-oceanic routes, Pan Am's emphasis on image and branding created the "jet-setter" lifestyle. On April 17, 1935, the S-42 Pioneer Clipper skimmed to the first ever landing in Hawaiian waters after a flight from Alameda, California that lasted 17 hours and 44 minutes. Offering luxury to both domestic and international travelers, Pan Am has left behind a legacy of comfort and sophistication that still resonates today.

Hanauma Bay is not only one of the most popular tourist destinations on Oahu but also functions to preserve the natural beauty unique to Hawaii. In 1967, Hanauma Bay was claimed by the State Division of Fish and Game as a Marine Protected Area, meaning everything from marine organisms to sand, was protected. A group of volunteers began teaching visitors about coral reef conservation, providing insight on ways to help preserve the precious sea life. An additional kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. This islet and the surrounding 77 underwater acres were announced a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, thus protected by the federal government. Molokini’s unique shape was created during World War II when the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice. Today, the exquisite islet offers a wide variety of corals and marine organisms inhabiting its sea life sanctuary.

Montague Rod Company became the biggest producer of split bamboo rods when it bought out the Chubb Rod Company in 1900. Based out of Montague City, Massachusetts, the company produced everything a fisherman could dream of from spinning, trolling, casting, ocean rods, and fly rods. Montague acquired a large customer base as fisherman passed up on the fancy and sought out the durable, thus drawn to Montague’s reputation of built and priced for the everyday fisherman. Over the years, Montague built more than 300 different fly rod models. Introduced in the late 1920’s, Red Wing was known as the higher end models of Montague. Rapidan was commonly agreed to be the mid level and Sunbeam the most common lower level. Though the company experienced booming success over the years, Montague was forced to close in 1955 after a trade embargo was placed on Chinese goods, causing a shortage of quality bamboo. The legend of Montague continues in the fishing world as companies draw on the magnitude of innovative designs.

Just down the road from the University of Hawaii on Oahu, the Blue Goose offered a full bar and live R&B musical performances. During the 1970s, a popular Hawaiian group called Jon & Randy played at the Blue Goose, drawing large crowds filling the bar to the brim. Although the Blue Goose bar closed its doors in the late 90s, the warm, welcoming spirit of Aloha lives on in the memories college students have of late nights, sticky floors and beautiful music.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they screen printed upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right? ;)
