Although little is known about the Chun’s Reef Surf Society, it is quite possible it was the North Shore’s first surfing club. The Chun’s Reef Surf Society consisted of a small group of local surfers including Jock Sutherland, Jeff Hakman, and a few of their North Shore neighbors. Best known as a reliable longboarding wave, Chun’s Reef was named in the late 60’s after John Chun who owned the house in front of the beach where the wave breaks. Chun’s children were avid surfers and they, along with others like Jock Sutherland, pioneered this now popular North Shore Spot. The wave at Chun’s is a hard and thick right break that holds well up to about 10 foot waves. It sits across the channel from another well known surf spot called Joko’s, which was named after Jock Sutherland who was known to frequent the spot by himself as others found the rocks and coral closer to the shore a potential hazard for their bodies and their boards.
