After leaving their summer feeding grounds in Alaska, gray humpback whales make the six-week journey to Hawaii to mate and give birth. More than 10,000 humpbacks migrate to Hawaii, making January - March the peak season for whale watching. The headquarters of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary is located on Maui, with the sanctuary including the leeward coastline of Maui. In Native Hawaiian culture, koholā, or humpback whales, are believed to be physical manifestations of Kanaloa, god of the sea and voyages in the ocean. Ivory from whale's teeth was carved into tongue-shaped pendants and braided into Native Hawaiian's hair. These symbolized a chief's status and authority to speak. With a koholā at your side, you will always find the courage to speak your mind.
