Welcome to sunny Southern California, the heart of modern surf culture and host to a multitude of sandy beaches, each with their own unique wave break and surf history. There are three major surfing areas that compose Los Angeles County’s 76-mile coastline; one of which consists of Hermosa, Redondo, and Manhattan Beach (commonly known as South Bay), along with Santa Monica and Venice beach. Popularly known as Santa Monica Bay, these metropolitan beach cities bustle with crowds of people eager to witness the abrupt beach break waves that the South Bay surfers expertly ride. This is home to world-renowned surfers such as Mickey Dora, Pete Peterson, Dale Velzy, Gidget, Greg Noll, the Beach Boys, and George Freeth. In 1907 at Venice Beach, George Freeth from Hawaii introduced surfing to Southern California. The sport continued to popularize when Duke Kahanamoku visited in the 1910s and 30s. Pete Peterson, a Santa Monica surfer and lifeguard, was named the greatest surfer on the coast. In 1949, Dale Velzy opened what is deemed the first surf shop in Manhattan Beach. South Bay Hermosa Beach became a major surfboard manufacturing city with companies owned by Greg Noll, Hap Jacobs, and Rick Stoner. Los Angeles was reborn as home to a dynamic and increasingly popular surf culture.
