Internationally revered in the automobile racing community, Bonneville National Speed Week is a prominent racing event that takes place over several days and showcases an assortment of courses. Clyde Cessna built and flew his first airplane in 1911, just 8 years after the Wright Brothers first took to the skies. He would continue to work on wood and fabric aircraft in the following years until founding the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company along with Victor Roos in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas. Roos resigned after just one month with Cessna buying back his interest and beginning work on the Cessna DC-6. The original Cessna brand was short lived with the Great Depression forcing it to shut down in 1932. Founded in 1989, the Hawaiian Longboard Surfing Association (HLSA) hosted many longboard surfing contests that invited, and even celebrated, amateurs rather than just professionals. Originally formed to promote local, national and even international amateur competition in longboard surfing, the club truly valued the beauty, strength and athleticism it takes to skillfully ride and maneuver a longboard. HLSA’s home base was at ‘Ewa Beach in Oahu, Hawaii. Lockheed Martin‘s history is full of over a century of innovation and ingenuity in aviation. Back in 1912 in Los Angeles, California, Glenn L. Martin, was building his first aircraft in a rented church building, with the encouragement of Orville Wright. 400 miles North in San Francisco, brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were developing seaplanes that would shatter records for distance and speed. Both companies would continue to evolve over the next 80 years consistently producing some of the finest aircraft in the world mostly for military use. This included the Stealth and Blackbird planes developed by Lockheed‘s secret Skunk Works division, and Martin creating everything from the P-38 Lightning plane to many of the rockets that helped propel the American space program. Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944. Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine. At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine. Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue. That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy. The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community.
