Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Soon enough, the snowmobile was well-known for its durability and reliability. By the early 1970s, Moto-Ski was the second best-selling snowmobile brand in Canada and third in the world. Although Moto-Ski originally listed snowmobiles by engine size and year rather than model name, they eventually adopted the naming trend. Revered Moto-Ski snowmobiles include the Grand Prix, Nuvik, Super-Sonic, Spirit, and Cadet. Moto-Ski boomed in business until its doors came to a close in 1985, yet their fame in the wintry world of snowmobiles is commemorated in the make of many snowmobiles today.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they screen printed upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right? ;)

As young people yearning to ride waves began to repair broken or lost boards, the Tontons Surfers were born as France’s first surf club. On September 16, 1959, Waikiki Surf Club was established by revered surfers George Hennebutte, Michel Barland, Joel Rosnay, Carlos Dogny, Jacques Rott, and Peter Viertel. Soon enough the competitions extended up to include beaches along the Basque Coast and attracted attention from surfers globally. Throughout the 1960s and1970s, surfers were flocking to Biarritz hoping to catch the perfect wave. To this day, France continues to attract surfers from all over the world eager to test the waters of the revered Biarritz Waikiki Surf Club.

Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

In 1961 Floyd Smith, a surfboard manufacturer based in San Diego, California, began printing his company logo on white shirts local surfers brought into Gordon & Smith Surfboards, and the surfer t-shirt was born. By the end of the year, the emerging market in silk-screen printing allowed printing of five-color O’Neill Surf Shop t-shirts and single-color Makaha International Surfing Championships t-shirts. After three years, surf t-shirts were being produced by the tens of thousands as the market widely expanded to include surf industry team t-shirts, competitor t-shirts for entrants in surf competitions and souvenirs from surfing destinations like Hawaii. During the mid-70s, surfer shirts by the California T-Shirts company were available in department stores throughout America and, by 2002, the production of surfer t-shirts had swelled to 300 million shirts annually. Their popularity skyrocketed as the entertainment industry modeled them through Mackenzie Phillips in American Graffiti and Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now. Today, surfer t-shirts continue to thrive worldwide and remind people of the rich history and blessing of surfing.
Montague Rod Company became the biggest producer of split bamboo rods when it bought out the Chubb Rod Company in 1900. Based out of Montague City, Massachusetts, the company produced everything a fisherman could dream of from spinning, trolling, casting, ocean rods, and fly rods. Montague acquired a large customer base as fisherman passed up on the fancy and sought out the durable, thus drawn to Montague’s reputation of built and priced for the everyday fisherman. Over the years, Montague built more than 300 different fly rod models. Introduced in the late 1920’s, Red Wing was known as the higher end models of Montague. Rapidan was commonly agreed to be the mid level and Sunbeam the most common lower level. Though the company experienced booming success over the years, Montague was forced to close in 1955 after a trade embargo was placed on Chinese goods, causing a shortage of quality bamboo. The legend of Montague continues in the fishing world as companies draw on the magnitude of innovative designs.

Fishermen go fast to get there, then slow to catch them. Oliver Corporations catered to the needs of these fishermen with their innovative outboard boat motor design. Located in Battlecreek, Michigan, the Oliver Corporation was a major manufacturer of industrial and farm equipment with an impressive international distribution network. Originating in 1924, the business was soon booming as farmers eagerly purchased their Oliver tractors. The corporation continued to introduce innovative lines of tractors, including diesel engines then gasoline and eventually a compact utility tractor. In 1954, the Oliver Corporation expanded its markets and acquired Chris Craft’s outboard boat motors tooling, intent on modernizing and renovating the motor design. The “J” Challenger and “K” Commander were released in 1955, a hot-ticket item on the market because of Oliver’s established reputation as a reputable industrial manufacturer. Although the Oliver Corporation was purchased by Perkins Ltd. based out of Peterborough, England, the legendary Oliver motors continue to live on in the boats of fishermen and tractors of farmers.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.
