The Hawaiian Masters was conceived and developed by Fred Hemmings three years after he won the 1968 World Surfing Championships. Held annually in December, the competition is home to one of the world's most explosive tubes breaking just 75 yards off the shore, allowing judges and spectators alike to have a great view. With a higher emphasis on tuberiding than other events, the competition became known as Pipeline Masters and has long been regarded as the world's top surfing contest. Hawaiian pro surfer Jeff Hackman won the first event in 1971, along with the $500 purse, and Pipeline legend Gerry Lopez won the next two years.
