A kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30 foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden.
From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. One of America’s favorite hobbies was born in Southern California in the 1930s. Prior to hot rods, performance vehicles were primarily confined to pricey luxury vehicles. Attempting to find a more price savvy route to speed and performance, Southern Californians with a passion for renovating cars began modifying Ford Model A and Ford Model T coupes and roadsters. While some stories attribute the name “hot rod” to the modified Ford V8s fueled by bootleg liquor during Prohibition, other stories claim Southern California car clubs invented the term. Gearheads stripped cars of extra weight, lowered suspension to improve handling, upgraded the engine and carburetion to amplify horsepower. Thanks to their limited budgets, the original hot rodders had to be inventive. During the 1950s and 1960s, hot rodding truly took off as NHRA’s national drag strip locations offered hot rods the opportunity to legally compete. Originally formed as a hobby shop, Acme Speed Shop quickly gained popularity, taking the automotive body shop from a garage into a fundamental part of the hot rod industry. Acme Speed Shop went on the road, traveling to different car shows throughout the country and celebrating the art and passion of hot rods through their products.

Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Dragmaster offered anything a car fanatic could dream, from kits to turnkey cars, as well as their revered Streetster. Inspired by the T roadster, the pair introduced the Streetster, a T-bucket tube-frame chassis kit, an item that propelled the Dragster name to stardom. The single-engine Dragmaster chassis became their signature as the car claimed victory in the NHRA Nationals in both 1957 and 1958, resulting in a high demand for the Dragmaster cars. Roland Leong began racing thanks to Dragmaster. After Top Fuel dragsters were allowed to race in NHRA races in 1965, the pair ceased construction of Dragmaster dragster chassis and began transitioning into an automotive repair shop. Although Dragmaster was sold in 1995, the legendary Dragmaster cars live on in the spirit of drag racing and racers.

The Go Karts racing around the track today were made possible thanks to John Steen who built an empire sky-high from the dust. John Steen inherited Steen’s Chemicals and Lubricants Company from his father and became the first to manufacture and sell the first synthetic oil in the United States. Though the business was off to a rough start, the growing popularity of Go Karts fueled the need for Steen’s C synthetic oil to run the engines. Steen’s first store opened its doors in Alhambra, California, and business experienced a second boom as the 1960s mini-bike movement ensued. A second store location opened and Steen decided it was time to build his own version of the mini-bike. Steen’s mini-bikes were metallic gold and minimally constructed for shipping purposes, yet crafted with the knowledge of years of cross-country racing experience. The Hodaka-powered two-wheelers constructed by Steen left a lasting mark on the motorcycle world. The trademark paperwork was soon to expire and John was sick. Delirious, he looked out the window and saw a Mexican restaurant that displayed an advertisement for “Taco’s The Mexican Sandwich.” John had his name. The Steen’s Taco Mini-Bike was revered not only for its name but its reliability.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired

A little known fact is that Indiana was a major player in the origins and rise of drag racing. The world-famous U.S. 30 Dragstrip opened 1957 in Hobart, Indiana, though it is rumored to have been open as early as 1954. In the 1960s, the owners began running radio ads and the iconic slogan, “Where The Great Ones Run!” causing hoards of Northwest Indiana and Chicago residents to flock to the dragstrip. The U.S. 30 became a wildly popular destination as major racers in the sport came to compete. “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Don “The Shoe” Schumacher, and Chris “The Greek” Karamesines are just a few of the big time names bringing the masses to the sidelines for a Sunday heart stopping thrill.

Nestled off the Los Angeles coastline, Santa Catalina Island was home to the Catalina Grand Prix, a popular 100-mile invitation-only motorcycle race. Competitors and fans boarded planes and boats to attend races held annually from 1951 to 1958. Motorcycling races were divided into two classes 250cc and over 250cc. While the 250cc race was 60 miles in total, the race for the bikes over 250cc was a laborious 100 miles. Elite members of the American Motorcycle Association competed in this demanding race as well as celebrities like Dave Ekins, Keenan Wynn, Steve McQueen, and Lee Marvin. Despite the raging success of the race and economic benefit it provided Catalina Island, multiple state and federal agencies found faults with the race and denied permits for any future events of its liking. The liveliness and the spirit cultivated by the wild motorcycle race will live on, ingrained in motorcycle culture.

Internationally revered in the automobile racing community, Bonneville National Speed Week is a prominent racing event that takes place over several days and showcases an assortment of courses. This event brings a diverse group of thrill-seeking car enthusiasts to the unique Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, U.S.A. Commonly known for its expansive stretch of salt, this historic venue came to be a phenomenon when adrenaline-seeking automobile lovers began testing the limits of their car speeds on the uniquely smooth surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Official races started in 1949 when the Southern California Timing Association and Bonneville Nationals, Inc. decided to organize a legitimate event. Drivers race in a diverse assortment of vehicles, from motorcycles and hot rods to streamliners and custom-built land-speed cars. The goal, of course, being to break an existing record or perhaps set a new one. Though it is a competition, there is always a sense of camaraderie as attendees and participants alike appreciate the impressive vehicles their peers have brought.

In 1967 Orange County International Raceway dubbed "The Super Track" roared to life in Irvine, California. The impressive track combined a 1⁄4-mile dragstrip, a 2-mile road course and even a motocross track—all just a hop away from the I-5 freeway! This racing haven was a game-changer, boasting spectator friendly features like lush landscaping, comfy reserved seating and the sport's very first electronic scoreboard. The legendary Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving took root in 1968. From sports cars to stock cars, OCIR was the place to be until its closure in 1983. Roland Leong recalls a legendary weekend racing his unpainted funny car that he quickly painted "Hawaiian" on with shoe polish! Roland competed in Orange County for a Hang Ten race featuring 16 cars. The prize for Low Elapsed Time in each round was $500. Whether you were revving up for a drag race or perfecting your driving skills, OCIR was the ultimate adrenaline playground!
