Lions Drag Strip

In the 1950s, street racing was a roaring part of Los Angeles culture, and Lions Drag Strip became its beating heart. Opened in October 1955 in the Wilmington district, the track attracted 15,000 fans on its first day. Sponsored by the Lions Club International, the strip quickly became a racing haven, hosting American Hot Rod Association-sanctioned events and drawing fans every Sunday. Under the management of Mickey Thompson, the introduction of Saturday night races skyrocketed attendance, especially among young fans. Though the beloved drag strip closed in 1972 to make way for shipping containers, its memory continues to thrive in pop culture through television, film, and tributes to legendary announcer Larry Huffman.
