Lockheed Martin‘s history is full of over a century of innovation and ingenuity in aviation. Back in 1912 in Los Angeles, California, Glenn L. Martin, was building his first aircraft in a rented church building, with the encouragement of Orville Wright. 400 miles North in San Francisco, brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were developing seaplanes that would shatter records for distance and speed. Both companies would continue to evolve over the next 80 years consistently producing some of the finest aircraft in the world mostly for military use. This included the Stealth and Blackbird planes developed by Lockheed‘s secret Skunk Works division, and Martin creating everything from the P-38 Lightning plane to many of the rockets that helped propel the American space program. The two companies merged in 1995 forming Lockheed Martin as an aviation powerhouse. Today the company continues to develop a wide array of aircraft, aerospace, and defense products including the new F-35 Lightining, for which there is a flight simulator located at Pearl Harbor.

In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island’s Kona Coast. Today, when it comes to surf clubs, the Waikiki Surf Club is second to none.  Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. In 1948 the best ideals of both clubs were realized in the Waikiki Surf Club.

Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii, and China.  In its earlier years, the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950.  In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name.  During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving airline industry technologies.  They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet.  By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds".  Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008.  Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

Today the sport of surfing and its cultural impact is felt all around the globe. Surfing was an integral part of life among native Hawaiians when Europeans began to arrive in the late 18th century. After being labeled as a taboo by Missionaries, surfing had a major resurgence in the mid 1900s. The history of surfing can be seen through the evolution of Hawaiian surfboards from the ancient paipo to the modern shortboard. Lifesize replicas of many of these boards are on display in the Malibu Shirts surf museum, including those shaped by the legendary Dale Velzy.

Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

In 1999 the Irwindale Speedway emerged, quickly followed by the opening of the ⅛-mile drag racing strip in 2001. Located in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, the Irwindale Dragstrip hosts legal drag races for cars, trucks, and motorcycles. A firm believer in abiding by street-legal automobiles, the drag strip proudly rejects the “nowhere else to go” notion practiced by illegal street racers. From 2003 to 2010, the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown competed on Irwindale Speedway’s ½-mile oval. This televised race included the top 30 drivers in the NASCAR K&N Pro series and the top 40 drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American series, attracting many car racing enthusiasts to what was known as the “best-of-the-best” race. Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.” The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore. At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni. From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

Like many of the early fliers, American Airlines started as a conglomeration of smaller regional airlines whose primary business was delivering US Mail. After World War II, American expanded its passenger business, including transcontinental jet service and routes to Hawaii. By 1970 there was a direct flight from New York to Honolulu, offering many mainlanders their first chance to visit the beautiful Aloha State. A few years later in 1973, American became the first major airline to employ a female pilot. Throughout the years American Airlines has been a major innovator in aviation and helped spread Aloha around the globe.
