Lockheed Martin‘s history is full of over a century of innovation and ingenuity in aviation. Back in 1912 in Los Angeles, California, Glenn L. Martin, was building his first aircraft in a rented church building, with the encouragement of Orville Wright. 400 miles North in San Francisco, brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were developing seaplanes that would shatter records for distance and speed. Both companies would continue to evolve over the next 80 years consistently producing some of the finest aircraft in the world mostly for military use. This included the Stealth and Blackbird planes developed by Lockheed‘s secret Skunk Works division, and Martin creating everything from the P-38 Lightning plane to many of the rockets that helped propel the American space program. The two companies merged in 1995 forming Lockheed Martin as an aviation powerhouse. Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service.  Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence.  When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States.  In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes.  During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona.  In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

Bell Helicopter was originally founded in Buffalo, New York in 1935 as Bell Aircraft Corporation by Lawrence Bell. Bell was originally focused on the development of fighter aircraft for military purposes, introducing models such as the Airacuda, Airacobra, and the first American fighter jet, called the Airacomet. However in 1941, Bell with the help of innovator Arthur Young, began research on Helicopters, flying their first model, the Bell 30, in 1942. Later models, such as the Bell 47 and the UH-1, better known as the Huey, were critical components in military operations. Bell continues operations today creating a wide variety of both commercial and military aircraft including many of the tour helicopters used to tour Hawaii's beautiful landscape

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944.  Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine.  At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine.  Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue.  That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy.  The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community.  Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm).  In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.
