The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

Elvis Presley performed in front of 4,000 screaming fans at Bloch Arena in Hawaii, on March 25, 1961, at the USS Arizona Memorial benefit concert commemorating the honorable soldiers who sunk with the USS Arizona during the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. Elvis said the only way he would perform is if every penny of the proceeds went to the memorial as the fundraising had stalled with only half of what was needed. Elvis bought half the special seats for patients of Tripler Hospital in Hawaii, performing 15 songs culminating in a slide across the stage on his knees. Elvis’s concert regenerated public awareness and donations poured in. A little over a year later on May 30, 1962, the memorial was completed. Having served in the U.S. Army, Elvis's passion for aiding the military convinced others to join the cause and in August 1965, when Elvis returned to Hawaii to film Paradise Hawaiian Style he visited the memorial and left a bell shaped wreath made of 1,177 carnations, in honor of the people who lost their lives aboard the Arizona, reading “Gone but not forgotten."

Christopher Columbus Smith was only 13 years old when he built his first wooden boat in 1874. He worked with his brother Henry and other innovators over the years before officially becoming Chris-Craft in 1924. Their mahogany hulled powerboats ruled American waterways from the 1920's on, in large part due to their assembly line manufacturing but also their sleek design. Chris-Craft boats are truly an American classic.

Academy award nominated director, Bruce Brown spent two years chasing summer around the world and capturing footage that set the standard for all future surf films. Surfers Michael Hynson and Robert August were lucky enough to get to search for the perfect wave off the coasts of Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti and Hawai'i. Screened to audiences in Southern California in 1964, and distributed world-wide in 1966, The Endless Summer would go onto generate over $30 million dollars at the box office, and take its rightful place as the king of surf videos.

The Maui Country Club, founded in 1925, was the first real golf course to be opened on the Island of Maui.  Hawai’i territorial senator Harold W. Rice, Frank Fowler Baldwin, and the 46 member Maui Golf Association negotiated an agreement with the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company for sixty-six acres of sugar cane fields, of which 60 acres would be used for a 9 hole golf course.  The club held its opening ceremonies on July 3, 1927, with the initial members consisting of 78 men and 10 women, with a membership fee of $50 per family and monthly dues of $2.75.  The private club still flourishes today in Spreckelsville, offering many fine amenities in a family friendly environment.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

In 1952, the Island Tobacco Company opened its doors in Honolulu, Hawaii. Island Tobacco Co. mainly focused on wholesale cigarettes and tobacco products distributed on Oahu. Before 1975, Island Tobacco was the only service jobber in Hawaii for tobacco products as it made store-door deliveries to independent retailers. Island Tobacco Co. became popular among supermarkets, restaurants, and grocery stores in Oahu as they were the only tobacco distributor delivering directly to the door. Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park

Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30-foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden.

From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. Honolulu surfer and restaurant supplier John Lind created the winter contest, sponsored by the Waianae Lions Club and Waikiki Surf Club, to attract the world’s best surfers.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist.  Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala.  Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months.  Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing.  There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run.  The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964.  There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.
