Unit price perWelcome to sunny Southern California, the heart of modern surf culture and host to a multitude of sandy beaches, each with their own unique wave break and surf history. There are three major surfing areas that compose Los Angeles County’s 76-mile coastline; one of which consists of Hermosa, Redondo, and Manhattan Beach (commonly known as South Bay), along with Santa Monica and Venice beach. Popularly known as Santa Monica Bay, these metropolitan beach cities bustle with crowds of people eager to witness the abrupt beach break waves that the South Bay surfers expertly ride. This is home to world-renowned surfers such as Mickey Dora, Pete Peterson, Dale Velzy, Gidget, Greg Noll, the Beach Boys, and George Freeth. In 1907 at Venice Beach, George Freeth from Hawaii introduced surfing to Southern California. The sport continued to popularize when Duke Kahanamoku visited in the 1910s and 30s. Pete Peterson, a Santa Monica surfer and lifeguard, was named the greatest surfer on the coast. In 1949, Dale Velzy opened what is deemed the first surf shop in Manhattan Beach. South Bay Hermosa Beach became a major surfboard manufacturing city with companies owned by Greg Noll, Hap Jacobs, and Rick Stoner. Los Angeles was reborn as home to a dynamic and increasingly popular surf culture.

Unit price perEdward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades. In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies. That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co. In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic. If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].” The name stuck.

$32.00 USD
Unit price perIn the mid 1950's Malibu was at the center of the surfing universe and a variety of surfboard manufacturers were popping up to fill the demand for quality surfboards. Tom Flaherty was running a sailing and diving shop in Malibu at this time, and plunged into the fast growing market with boards he was personally shaping and glassing. His craftsmanship quickly gained a following and Flaherty began employing guest shapers and glassers including names like Donald Takayama and Wayne Miyata. The Flaherty continued to flourish in over the following decade with shops opening in Venice, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, and Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Flaherty was popular amongst serious surfers due to his focus on designs that enhanced performance and also venturing in the use of new materials. Flaherty was one of the first manufacturers to incorporate foam, allowing his boards to lose weight and gain maneuverability and speed. Tom was also well known for producing some of the finest big wave guns of the era, capable of challenging the North Shore's most fierce waves.

Unit price perIn 1961 Floyd Smith, a surfboard manufacturer based in San Diego, California, began printing his company logo on white shirts local surfers brought into Gordon & Smith Surfboards, and the surfer t-shirt was born. By the end of the year, the emerging market in silk-screen printing allowed printing of five-color O’Neill Surf Shop t-shirts and single-color Makaha International Surfing Championships t-shirts. After three years, surf company t-shirts were being produced by the tens of thousands as the market widely expanded to include surf industry team t-shirts and competitor t-shirts for entrants in surf competitions. During the mid-70s, surfer shirts by the California T-Shirts company were available in department stores throughout America and, by 2002, the production of surfer t-shirts had swelled to 300 million shirts annually. Their popularity skyrocketed as the entertainment industry modeled them through Mackenzie Phillips in American Graffiti and Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now. Today, surfer t-shirts continue to thrive worldwide and remind people of the rich history and blessing of surfing.
