Leaving the reindeer back in the snowy North Pole, Kanakaloka shreds the Hawaiian surf to shore in an outrigger canoe. Elvis, the King of Rock and Roll is perhaps the best known name in 20th century music and entertainment. During his 23 year career Elvis would craft music that would sell over 600 million albums, and star in 31 feature films. During his illustrious career Hawaii would become almost a second home to Elvis, who would not only film 3 of his movies on The Islands, but also made it one of his favorite vacation spots. In addition to filming Blue Hawaii, Girls! Girls! Girls! and Paradise, Hawaiian Style, he would also perform several concerts in Hawaii, including his famous 1973 TV concert special, Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii.

The Grand Hotel in Wailuku Maui opened in 1916 and was considered the premier hotel on Maui. Designed by Honolulu architect, J. Holmberg, the hotel featured a spacious lobby and dining room as well as a wrap around lanai. In 1929 the "Maui Grand," as it was now called, underwent an extensive renovation adding an entirely new 25 room wing, bringing the total rooms to 61, making it the largest hotel in Maui County through the end of WWII. The hotel remained open through the early 1960's.
It is believed that the traditional hula, Kahiko, has been part of the Hawaiian culture since ancient times. Today it is much more common to see the contemporary hula known as ‘Auana. King David Kalakaua, revered as the Merrie Monarch, had a profound love and appreciation for the hula dance. He said, “Hula is the language of the heart, and, therefore, the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” Everything that one does when hula dancing means something. The face, the hands, the feet, and the hips all look or move a certain way, each playing a part of the larger story.

In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Along with silky sand blanketing your steps in Hawaii, you may feel a foot full of egg shells and yolk thanks to Hawaii’s feathery friends. Free-range chickens roam the Hawaiian islands, an unusual attraction visitors love to talk about. They are believed to be descendants of birds freed when Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992 destroyed coops. Termed “reverse domestication” in which these domestic chickens are now Hawaii’s wild animals, the number of wild chickens roaming the Hawaiian islands only increases as there are few predators for the chickens, and tropical storms continue freeing chickens. According to Hawaii state, feral chickens are domestic free-range chickens on state property. People are allowed to trap the chickens but only with approval. Although the constant clucking and interesting egg laying spots may be a nuisance, the chickens are an endearing part of Hawaii’s charm.
