The United States Surfing Association was formed in 1961 to improve the sport's image as well as to govern surf competitions throughout the United States. USSA members, such as Corky Carroll, Mike Doyle, David Nuuhiwa and Joyce Hoffman, competed in world-class surf contests all across the globe. Issued jerseys displaying their call numbers, they were judged on a point system through various heats, with the top point-getter taking home the championship trophy. Following the 1967 season, the USSA split into four regional groups: the Western Surfing Association, the Eastern Surfing Association, the Hawaiian Surfing Association and the Gulf Coast Surfing Association. Winners of the 1967 United States Surfing Championship held in Huntington Beach, CA were Corky Carroll (men's), Joyce Hoffman (woman's) and Dru Harrison (juniors).

As the name suggests, Hawaii Country Club is in fact the oldest public golf course on the island of Oahu. Opened in 1958, Hawaii Country Club is located in the “Kunia district” among the majestic pineapple fields at the foot of the Waianae Mountain Range. While many new golf courses were built on defunct sugar can plantations, Hawaii Country Club was not. It preserves the natural topography of the land and captures the atmosphere of the good-old-days of Hawaii. On clear days, there are magnificent views of Pearl Harbor and Diamond head, and if you stay into the evening, you can see the beautiful city lights of Honolulu.

In 1959, the Hawaiian Islands, offering everything from awe-inspiring volcanoes to soothing seas, was officially declared America’s 50th state. The Grand Hotel in Wailuku Maui opened in 1916 and was considered the premier hotel on Maui. Designed by Honolulu architect, J. Holmberg, the hotel featured a spacious lobby and dining room as well as a wrap around lanai. In 1929 the "Maui Grand," as it was now called, underwent an extensive renovation adding an entirely new 25 room wing, bringing the total rooms to 61, making it the largest hotel in Maui County through the end of WWII. The hotel remained open through the early 1960's.

Seeing an exotic pink South American bird strutting around Hawaii is unexpected, though you may be lucky enough to see one if you travel to Maui. Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Shaved ice has been a Hawaiian tradition ever since the plantation days. Hot, exhausted workers would shave a block of ice with a hand saw and flavor it with juice, which is basically the same way it's done today! The Aoki family has been making shave ice since the 1930's when the Shimoda family sold the cool treat in the old Haliewa Theater. After the theatre closed, Sumie Shimoda Aoki and her son Michael Aoki, opened up Aoki's Shave Ice in 1981. Nestled in historic Haliewa town, Aoki's makes all their own syrup daily and offers delicious flavors of ice cream and smoothies as well.

Situated in heavenly Hana on the windward side of the island of Maui, the Hasegawa General Store was founded in 1910 by brothers Shoichi and Saburo Hasegawa at the site of the current Hasegawa Gas Station. The brick store which stands today was built in 1958 and made famous in 1961 by composer Paul Weston who wrote the song “The Hasegawa General Store.†For over 100 years the Hasegawa General Store has been one of the few places to shop for basic items in idyllic Hana and is one of the only remaining family owned business on Maui.

Number One to the Sun. Soaring to the skies in 1926, Eastern Airlines became one of the “Big Four '' domestic airlines, maintaining a near monopoly in flights between New York and Florida from 1930 to 1950. The Big Four airlines were created by the Spoils Conferences of 1930 and became the dominant airlines in United States air travel. Customer satisfaction was optimal and Eastern proudly stood by its “We want everyone to fly” slogan. They were the official airline of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, proudly representing Florida in the skies. Deregulation during the 1980s took a toll financially on Eastern Airlines and the airline was forced to retire in 1991 after labor disputes. Although Eastern Airlines is no longer in the skies, its legendary contributions live on in the world of flying today.

When you think of Hawaii, probably one of the last things you think of is race cars, but perhaps you should think twice about them. Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40-year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand Marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. From 1983-1991, Hawaiian Punch sponsored Leong’s™ Funny Cars, which was one of the longest-running sponsorships in drag racing history. Roland Leong wasn't just any Hawaiian, but "The Hawaiian"!

Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Dragmaster offered anything a car fanatic could dream, from kits to turnkey cars, as well as their revered Streetster. Inspired by the T roadster, the pair introduced the Streetster, a T-bucket tube-frame chassis kit, an item that propelled the Dragster name to stardom. The single-engine Dragmaster chassis became their signature as the car claimed victory in the NHRA Nationals in both 1957 and 1958, resulting in a high demand for the Dragmaster cars. Roland Leong began racing thanks to Dragmaster. After Top Fuel dragsters were allowed to race in NHRA races in 1965, the pair ceased construction of Dragmaster dragster chassis and began transitioning into an automotive repair shop. Although Dragmaster was sold in 1995, the legendary Dragmaster cars live on in the spirit of drag racing and racers.

At the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s, business was booming at the races as a multitude of radio ads sparked interest among pop radio station listeners in San Francisco Bay, beckoning them to the thrill of the competitions. Races fueled the economy in the surrounding area as thousands of fans were eager to witness world-record performances by Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, and more. Many champions heralded the low humidity air from the San Francisco Bay that allowed them to acquire astounding speeds. Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

A monumental shift began in drag racing during 1960 as drag racing champions, both new and old, changed to the “Big G” NHRA-sanctioned Detroit Dragway in Michigan which was the location where Don Garlits smashed the 187.10 MPH record from Fremont, California, going 190.27 miles per hour in a Giovannoni-equipped car. This shocking achievement elicited waves of excitement from dragster fans and further increased Giovannoni’s popularity.

This televised race included the top 30 drivers in the NASCAR K&N Pro series and the top 40 drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American series, attracting many car racing enthusiasts to what was known as the “best-of-the-best” race. Irwindale Speedway continues to be home to a diverse variety of car races from the Turkey Night Grand Prix to the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown to the Formula D Championship Series.

Opened in 1963, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The 66-acre Raceway Park played host to both professional and amateur racing of funny cars, stock cars, dragsters, and motocross and more until its eventual shutdown in 2006. Over its active years, the park included a ¼ mile racing track, drag strip, as well as a motocross and BMX venue.

Sundays in Western New York during the 1960's and early 70's were reserved for a day at the races. Originally known as Niagara Falls Airport Drag Strip, the track opened its gates in 1961 and quickly became one of drag racing’s hottest venues. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the New York State Championship Drag meet. 4500 plus avid drag racing fans flocked to the venue to cheer more than 224 races. Every season attracted legendary names to the bigger shows as Niagara Falls’s Deuces Wild car club became Niagara’s track crew and young drag racing pros began competing at the track. On July 10, 1964, Niagara Drag Strip was officially sanctioned for approval by the NHRA. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the legendary 1967 NASCAR Summer Nationals attracting racing fans from all over the country. Although Niagara Drag Strip closed its gates in 1974 due to complaints of raucous noise, the legendary drag strip lives on in the heart of racing as fans commemorate the monumental victories of the track.
