As with many earlier air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline, it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969, it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970s and 1980s, Western increased service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986, Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

The United States Surfing Association was formed in 1961 to improve the sport’s image as well as to govern surf competitions throughout the United States. USSA members, such as Corky Carroll, Mike Doyle, David Nuuhiwa and Joyce Hoffman, competed in world-class surf contests all across the globe. Issued jerseys displaying their call numbers, they were judged on a point system through various heats, with the top point-getter taking home the championship trophy. Following the 1967 season, the USSA split into four regional groups: the Western Surfing Association, the Eastern Surfing Association, the Hawaiian Surfing Association and the Gulf Coast Surfing Association. Winners of the 1967 United States Surfing Championship held in Huntington Beach, CA were Corky Carroll (men's), Joyce Hoffman (woman's) and Dru Harrison (juniors).

Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic  was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.”  The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore.  At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni.  From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival. They renamed themselves Maui Surf Club and held the First Annual Lahaina Invitational Surfboard Paddling Races, dated June 11, 1960.

The Grand Hotel in Wailuku Maui opened in 1916 and was considered the premier hotel on Maui. Designed by Honolulu architect, J. Holmberg, the hotel featured a spacious lobby and dining room as well as a wrap around lanai. In 1929 the "Maui Grand," as it was now called, underwent an extensive renovation adding an entirely new 25 room wing, bringing the total rooms to 61, making it the largest hotel in Maui County through the end of WWII. The hotel remained open through the early 1960's.

Ford Island has a long and storied history in American military history dating back to 1917 when the 6th Aero Squadron was created in Honolulu and made Ford Island their base.  The United State Military had previously secured rights to the Island in 1887 with King Kalakaua in exchange for allowing Hawaiian sugar to enter the United States duty free.  Located in the middle of Pearl Harbor the Island's location was an ideal location for an airfield.  From 1917 - 1919, the Army would build up a sizable airbase with a runway, hangers, military housing and communications.  In 1919, the field was officially named Luke Field after famed WWI ace pilot, Frank Luke.  Lieutenant Frank Luke had tallied 18 kills during his service in the European campaign, and had a reputation as a gifted pilot, although he was a bit of a renegade, often disobeying military flight orders.  Luke Field remained in operation for many years, through the attack on Pearl Harbor and beyond, although its name was changed around 1923 to Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor when the Navy took control of Ford Island from the Army.
