Although Duke Kahanamoku first introduced surfing to Atlantic City in 1912, the sport didn’t really grow in popularity until the 1960’s. The Jersey Surfing Association was formed in 1963, and soon local and statewide contests were held all along the Jersey Shore. After the Eastern Surfing Association (ESA) was founded in 1967, hundreds of contests were organized up and down the East Coast, and the Atlantic City U.S. International Surfing Contest was one of them.
