By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds". Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008. There are three major surfing areas that compose Los Angeles County’s 76-mile coastline; one of which consists of Hermosa, Redondo, and Manhattan Beach (commonly known as South Bay), along with Santa Monica and Venice beach. Popularly known as Santa Monica Bay, these metropolitan beach cities bustle with crowds of people eager to witness the abrupt beach break waves that the South Bay surfers expertly ride. This is home to world-renowned surfers such as Mickey Dora, Pete Peterson, Dale Velzy, Gidget, Greg Noll, the Beach Boys, and George Freeth. In 1907 at Venice Beach, George Freeth from Hawaii introduced surfing to Southern California. The sport continued to popularize when Duke Kahanamoku visited in the 1910s and 30s. Pete Peterson, a Santa Monica surfer and lifeguard, was named the greatest surfer on the coast. In 1949, Dale Velzy opened what is deemed the first surf shop in Manhattan Beach. South Bay Hermosa Beach became a major surfboard manufacturing city with companies owned by Greg Noll, Hap Jacobs, and Rick Stoner. Los Angeles was reborn as home to a dynamic and increasingly popular surf culture.

These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Unit price perEdward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades. In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies. That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co. In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic. If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].” The name stuck.

The name Plastic Fantastic was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.” The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore. At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni. From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.
