In 1950 C.J. “Pappy” Hart joined Creighton Hunter and Frank Stillwell in transforming an Orange County airfield into what is widely recognized as America’s first commercial drag strip. A racer, promoter and visionary, Hart believed hot rodders needed a safe place to race, helping turn a growing Southern California pastime into an organized sport. During Santa Ana Drags’ nine-year run, thousands of racers tested their machines on the quarter-mile, laying the groundwork for modern drag racing.
