Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Christopher Columbus Smith was only 13 years old when he built his first wooden boat in 1874. He worked with his brother Henry and other innovators over the years before officially becoming Chris-Craft in 1924. Their mahogany hulled powerboats ruled American waterways from the 1920's on, in large part due to their assembly line manufacturing but also their sleek design. Makaha Skateboards was founded in 1963 by a Venice Beach, California lifeguard named Larry Stevenson. Larry was sitting in his lifeguard tower when he first noticed kids skateboarding on homemade boards in the parking lots that lined the beach. He decided to manufacture a quality skateboard and tie it to the best surf spot in Hawaii - Makaha Beach. Larry was also publisher of SurfGuide magazine, which ran the first skateboard ads, cartoons, and articles about the Makaha Team. The combination of the quality Makaha boards along with Larry’s promotion created skateboarding’s first wave, including appearances on the Steve Allen Show and the Art Linkletter Show.

The Maui Country Club, founded in 1925, was the first real golf course to be opened on the Island of Maui. Hawai’i territorial senator Harold W. Rice, Frank Fowler Baldwin, and the 46 member Maui Golf Association negotiated an agreement with the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company for sixty-six acres of sugar cane fields, of which 60 acres would be used for a 9 hole golf course. The club held its opening ceremonies on July 3, 1927, with the initial members consisting of 78 men and 10 women, with a membership fee of $50 per family and monthly dues of $2.75. The private club still flourishes today in Spreckelsville, offering many fine amenities in a family friendly environment.

The Hawaiian Masters was conceived and developed by Fred Hemmings three years after he won the 1968 World Surfing Championships. Held annually in December, the competition is home to one of the world's most explosive tubes breaking just 75 yards off the shore, allowing judges and spectators alike to have a great view. With a higher emphasis on tuberiding than other events, the competition became known as Pipeline Masters and has long been regarded as the world's top surfing contest. Hawaiian pro surfer Jeff Hackman won the first event in 1971, along with the $500 purse, and Pipeline legend Gerry Lopez won the next two years.

Greg Noll Surfboards was founded in 1951 in Manhattan Beach and later moved to Hermosa Beach in 1959 at which point it was the largest surfboard shop in the world. Nicknamed “Da Bull” for both his large physique and his hard-charging style, Greg Noll famously rode a 35-footer at Makaha on December 4, 1969 which remained the largest wave ever ridden for more than 20 years. Over the years countless clubs have been endorsed by Greg Noll Surfboards, including Leeward Surf Club which was comprised of a bunch of guys from Ewa Beach lead by Charlie Galanto. Only 12 of these shirts were created for the members and none were ever sold.

In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island’s Kona Coast. Today, when it comes to surf clubs, the Waikiki Surf Club is second to none. Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. In 1948 the best ideals of both clubs were realized in the Waikiki Surf Club.

Founded in Haleiwa in 1961, Surfboards Hawaii was the performance board of choice for the biggest names in surfing during the Sixties. Everyone from Buzzy Trent and Jeff Hakman to Fred Van Dyke and Alton Tavaris rode one. As did International Surfing Hall of Famer and Makaha champ, Fred Hemmings. There was even a Buffalo Model, named for Buffalo “Mr. Makaha” Keaulana, who preferred Surfboards Hawaii to any other maker. The first person to write about Hawaii and surfing was British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778 after seeing Hawaiian wave-riders at the Big Island’s Kealakekua Bay. Cook’s stories of the wonders that he saw and the people that he encountered excited the entire continent of Europe. In many books, such as Polynesian Researches written by William Ellis in 1859, stories of Cook’s travels were brought to life in etchings, a drawing technique in which artists would use strong acid or mordant to cut into metal surfaces to create a design.

In 1956, renting a surfboard for an hour cost $1.00 - and getting the board along with an instructor was $3.00. Oh how the times have changed! Hale Auau Surfboards was started by surfer Earl Akana. Several of his instructors were beachboys and surf legends who competed in International Surfing Championships back in the day: Edward Whaley, Wata Watanabe, Mud Werner and Junior Kahele.

Edward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades. In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies. That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co. In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic. If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].” The name stuck.

In the mid 1950's Malibu was at the center of the surfing universe and a variety of surfboard manufacturers were popping up to fill the demand for quality surfboards. Tom Flaherty was running a sailing and diving shop in Malibu at this time, and plunged into the fast growing market with boards he was personally shaping and glassing. His craftsmanship quickly gained a following and Flaherty began employing guest shapers and glassers including names like Donald Takayama and Wayne Miyata. The Flaherty continued to flourish in over the following decade with shops opening in Venice, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, and Waikiki Beach in Hawaii. Flaherty was popular amongst serious surfers due to his focus on designs that enhanced performance and also venturing in the use of new materials. Flaherty was one of the first manufacturers to incorporate foam, allowing his boards to lose weight and gain maneuverability and speed. Tom was also well known for producing some of the finest big wave guns of the era, capable of challenging the North Shore's most fierce waves.

Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944. Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine. At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine. Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue. That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy. The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community. Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm). In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.

Opened in 1962, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The 66-acre Raceway Park played host to both professional and amateur racing of funny cars, stock cars, dragsters, and motocross and more until its eventual shutdown in 2006. Over its active years, the park included a ¼ mile racing track, drag strip, as well as a motocross and BMX venue.

The beloved animated character Gumby was first created in the early 1950s by Art Clokey, who had been developing his clay animation techniques at the University of Southern California. In 1955, Clokey created a pilot featuring Gumby, which was immediately picked up by executives at NBC, who featured a Gumby short called ”Gumby on the Moon” on the Howdy Doody show in 1956. Gumby became an instant hit, and in 1957, Gumby had his own show that ran through the ‘50s and ‘60s. Gumby was later revived in 1988, with a new set of adventures, once again following Gumby and his friends through a variety of locations and historical times. In one episode in the original series, Gumby and Pokey believe they are stowing away in a box headed for Hawaii. Once they reach their destination they find that somehow they have ended up in the middle of Alaska rather than a tropical paradise.

In 1932 The Associated Oil Company launched a brand of premium grade gasoline called Flying A. Associated Oil had been serving Hawaii since the early 1900's so it did not take long for the Flying A brand to begin appearing in Hawaii after the brand launched. After WWII, there was a boom in Hawaiian gas and service stations, with Flying A being one of the most common brands on The Islands. The classic Flying A logo could be seen at locations such as Nobu's Service Station on Kalakaua Ave in Honolulu. Nobu's was a full service station offering gasoline, battery, mechanic, and lubrication services from 1958 through the brand's decline in the early 1970's.

Clyde Cessna built and flew his first airplane in 1911, just 8 years after the Wright Brothers first took to the skies. He would continue to work on wood and fabric aircraft in the following years until founding the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company along with Victor Roos in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas. Roos resigned after just one month with Cessna buying back his interest and beginning work on the Cessna DC-6. The original Cessna brand was short lived with the Great Depression forcing it to shut down in 1932. In 1934, Dwight and Dwayne Wallace took over the Cessna name and began establishing Cessna as one of the premier small aircraft companies in the world. Although they did build some planes for Military use in WWII, Cessna quickly returned to commercial production in 1948, focusing on all-metal aircraft made from production parts, rather than the hand-built process. In the following decades Cessna would introduce airplanes, such as the Cessna CH-1 and 172. They would also develop a helicopter in 1955, and introduce their first jet in 1969. Cessna continues to make commercial airplanes, personal aircraft, and business class jets. And, if you happen to fly Mokulele Airlines from one island to another in Hawaii, there is a good chance you'll be flying in a Cessna Caravan.

Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii, and China. In its earlier years, the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950. In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name. During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving airline industry technologies. They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet. By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds". Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008. Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.
