Kicking off in the late 60s and continuing into the 70s, the Sunshine Music Festival, commonly known as Crater Fest, was held in the unique venue of Diamond Head. Visitation was permissible only through a special-permit, making the experience all the more surreal. After acquiring the permit, a radio station hosted a concert series inside Diamond Head crater featuring renowned artists such as Santana, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Jefferson Airplane, and Buddy Miles. With its Woodstock-esque demeanor, the concerts attracted free-spirited individuals. While the first year saw an impressive 12,000 guests, by the third, it had grown to an astonishing 75,000, not so surprising when you hear that admission is free. Though the festivals came to a close in the late 70s, there were two revivals in 2006 and 2007 where notable performers such as the Steve Miller Band and Earth, Wind, and Fire performed.
