When you think of Hawaii, probably one of the last things you think of is race cars, but perhaps you should think twice about them. Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40 year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. Bell Helicopter was originally founded in Buffalo, New York in 1935 as Bell Aircraft Corporation by Lawrence Bell. Bell was originally focused on the development of fighter aircraft for military purposes, introducing models such as the Airacuda, Airacobra, and the first American fighter jet, called the Airacomet. However in 1941, Bell with the help of innovator Arthur Young, began research on Helicopters, flying their first model, the Bell 30, in 1942. Later models, such as the Bell 47 and the UH-1, better known as the Huey, were critical components in military operations. Bell continues operations today creating a wide variety of both commercial and military aircraft including many of the tour helicopters used to tour Hawaii's beautiful landscape

Along with silky sand blanketing your steps in Hawaii, you may feel a foot full of egg shells and yolk thanks to Hawaii’s feathery friends. Free-range chickens roam the Hawaiian islands, an unusual attraction visitors love to talk about. They are believed to be descendants of birds freed when Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992 destroyed coops. Termed “reverse domestication” in which these domestic chickens are now Hawaii’s wild animals, the number of wild chickens roaming the Hawaiian islands only increases as there are few predators for the chickens, and tropical storms continue freeing chickens. According to Hawaii state, feral chickens are domestic free-range chickens on state property. People are allowed to trap the chickens but only with approval. Although the constant clucking and interesting egg laying spots may be a nuisance, the chickens are an endearing part of Hawaii’s charm. Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Clyde Cessna built and flew his first airplane in 1911, just 8 years after the Wright Brothers first took to the skies. He would continue to work on wood and fabric aircraft in the following years until founding the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company along with Victor Roos in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas. Roos resigned after just one month with Cessna buying back his interest and beginning work on the Cessna DC-6. The original Cessna brand was short lived with the Great Depression forcing it to shut down in 1932. In 1934, Dwight and Dwayne Wallace took over the Cessna name and began establishing Cessna as one of the premier small aircraft companies in the world. Although they did build some planes for Military use in WWII, Cessna quickly returned to commercial production in 1948, focusing on all-metal aircraft made from production parts, rather than the hand-built process. In the following decades Cessna would introduce airplanes, such as the Cessna CH-1 and 172. They would also develop a helicopter in 1955, and introduce their first jet in 1969. Cessna continues to make commercial airplanes, personal aircraft, and business class jets. And, if you happen to fly Mokulele Airlines from one island to another in Hawaii, there is a good chance you'll be flying in a Cessna Caravan.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

From 1915 to 1921, Hawaiian counties issued license plates yearly until 1922, in which a multitude of counties in the Territory of Hawaii unified to discuss the distribution of license plates. Throughout their history, Hawaiian license plates have gone through a variety of alterations and materials, ranging from wood to porcelain to steel-embossed with swordfish, automobile, and surfer-shaped expiration tags. Hawaiian license plates manufactured in 1976 were the first to display print on retro-reflective foil. The first graphic to be featured on Hawaiian license plates was the territory’s name, stamped on the license plate in a South Pacific font. After Hawaii became an official state in 1959, the slogan became “Aloha State.” The tv-show Hawaii Five-O popularized Hawaiian license plates beginning in 1968 and, continued the trend through 1988 with the tv-show Magnum P.I. displaying the Aloha State warrior license plate on a red Ferrari 308 GTS featuring the number ROBIN 1. Although vintage Hawaiian license plates have reached high demand in recent years, they are difficult to procure as steel license plates have been destroyed by the salt from the ocean.

Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944.  Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine.  At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine.  Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue.  That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy.  The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community.  Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm).  In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.

Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Dragmaster offered anything a car fanatic could dream, from kits to turnkey cars, as well as their revered Streetster. Inspired by the T roadster, the pair introduced the Streetster, a T-bucket tube-frame chassis kit, an item that propelled the Dragster name to stardom. The single-engine Dragmaster chassis became their signature as the car claimed victory in the NHRA Nationals in both 1957 and 1958, resulting in a high demand for the Dragmaster cars. Roland Leong began racing thanks to Dragmaster. After Top Fuel dragsters were allowed to race in NHRA races in 1965, the pair ceased construction of Dragmaster dragster chassis and began transitioning into an automotive repair shop. Although Dragmaster was sold in 1995, the legendary Dragmaster cars live on in the spirit of drag racing and racers.
