As with many earlier air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline, it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969, it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970s and 1980s, Western increased service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986, Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist.  Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala.  Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months.  Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing.  There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run.  The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964.  There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

The United States Surfing Association was formed in 1961 to improve the sport’s image as well as to govern surf competitions throughout the United States. USSA members, such as Corky Carroll, Mike Doyle, David Nuuhiwa and Joyce Hoffman, competed in world-class surf contests all across the globe. Issued jerseys displaying their call numbers, they were judged on a point system through various heats, with the top point-getter taking home the championship trophy. Following the 1967 season, the USSA split into four regional groups: the Western Surfing Association, the Eastern Surfing Association, the Hawaiian Surfing Association and the Gulf Coast Surfing Association. Winners of the 1967 United States Surfing Championship held in Huntington Beach, CA were Corky Carroll (men's), Joyce Hoffman (woman's) and Dru Harrison (juniors).

Greg Noll Surfboards was founded in 1951 in Manhattan Beach and later moved to Hermosa Beach in 1959 at which point it was the largest surfboard shop in the world. Nicknamed “Da Bull” for both his large physique and his hard-charging style, Greg Noll famously rode a 35-footer at Makaha on December 4, 1969 which remained the largest wave ever ridden for more than 20 years. In 1964, Greg Noll began to work with big-surf enthusiast, Charlie Galanto, shaping, refurbishing and creating boards. Located on 1235 Kapiolani Boulevard, Greg Noll Surfcenter became a popular hangout for many famous surfers of the time such as George Downing and Felipe Pomar. Ben Aipa and Robert Scheufele shaped boards at the Surfcenter, while Craig Sugihara was a glasser. Infamous Dick Brewer shaped boards at the Greg Noll Surfcenter. Most of the boards shaped at the Greg Noll Surfcenter are labeled with with Greg Noll Surfcenter Hawaii logo.

Vought Aircraft’s VE-7 made its mark in aviation history in 1922, becoming the first aircraft to take off from a carrier. Chance Milton Vought, a young and ambitious aeronautical engineer and aviation pioneer, established Vought Aircraft in 1917. In 1926, Vought again revolutionized the aviation industry with the O2U-1, a biplane used at sea and on land. Vought Aircrafts boasts more than 15,000 aircrafts in more than 50 models. Many of Vought’s aircrafts, including the F4U Corsair, F8U Crusader and A-7 Corsair II, contributed to aviation victories for the U.S. military and Vought was awarded the Collier Trophy for his F8U aircraft. In 1995, Northrop Grumman acquired Vought Aircraft Company and is known today as the Vought Center, Northrop Grumman Commercial Aircraft Division.

The Malibu Surf Club was founded in 1952 by a small but dedicated group of surfers that included such well-known members as Matt Kivlin, Les Williams, Joe and Aggie Quigg, Nina "Honeybear" Warren, and rat pack original - Peter Lawford. Kivlin designed the original lettering for the club logo which first appeared on a classic surf sweater with the sewn-on hood.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park

When you think of Hawaii, probably one of the last things you think of is race cars, but perhaps you should think twice about them. Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40 year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. Lockheed Martin‘s history is full of over a century of innovation and ingenuity in aviation.  Back in 1912 in Los Angeles, California, Glenn L. Martin, was building his first aircraft in a rented church building, with the encouragement of Orville Wright.  400 miles North in San Francisco, brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were developing seaplanes that would shatter records for distance and speed.  Both companies would continue to evolve over the next 80 years consistently producing some of the finest aircraft in the world mostly for military use.  This included the Stealth and Blackbird planes developed by Lockheed‘s secret Skunk Works division, and Martin creating everything from the P-38 Lightning plane to many of the rockets that helped propel the American space program.  The two companies merged in 1995 forming Lockheed Martin as an aviation powerhouse.  Today the company continues to develop a wide array of aircraft, aerospace, and defense products including the new F-35 Lightining, for which there is a flight simulator located at Pearl Harbor.
