Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944.  Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine.  At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine.  Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue.  That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy.  The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community.  Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm).  In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.

Originally known as the Maui Prince Hotel established in August 1986, the renamed Makena Beach & Golf Resort attracted tourists through a variety of enticing features beginning when it reopened in January 2012. When the land was commercialized in 1983 for the construction of the original hotel, the developers prioritized maintaining the natural Hawaiian beauty by preserving about 1,300 acres of the surrounding land and golf courses in their natural condition. Operating under Landmark Hotels Group, Inc., the Makena Resort offered an extensive assortment of activities, including: two outdoor pools, 290 rooms and 20 suites, an 18-hole golf course, a shopping arcade, tennis courts, and water sport lessons. Furthermore, the resort celebrated and supported the preservation of Hawaii’s natural beauty by sponsoring events such as the Run and Walk for the Whales. After a Hawaiian developer proposed a plan to the Maui Planning Commission to reconstruct the resort into luxury apartments and a hotel, the hotel was closed and dismantled in 2018.

In 1999 the Irwindale Speedway emerged, quickly followed by the opening of the ⅛-mile drag racing strip in 2001. Located in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, the Irwindale Dragstrip hosts legal drag races for cars, trucks, and motorcycles. A firm believer in abiding by street-legal automobiles, the drag strip proudly rejects the “nowhere else to go” notion practiced by illegal street racers. From 2003 to 2010, the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown competed on Irwindale Speedway’s ½-mile oval. This televised race included the top 30 drivers in the NASCAR K&N Pro series and the top 40 drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American series, attracting many car racing enthusiasts to what was known as the “best-of-the-best” race. Irwindale Speedway continues to be home to a diverse variety of car races from the Turkey Night Grand Prix to the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown to the Formula D Championship Series.

When you think of Hawaii, probably one of the last things you think of is race cars, but perhaps you should think twice about them. Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40 year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. Although most youngsters did not go on to pursue surfing professionally, the friendships they forged and all the great memories would stay with them forever.

The United States Surfing Association was formed in 1961 to improve the sport's image as well as to govern surf competitions throughout the United States. USSA members, such as Corky Carroll, Mike Doyle, David Nuuhiwa and Joyce Hoffman, competed in world-class surf contests all across the globe. Issued jerseys displaying their call numbers, they were judged on a point system through various heats, with the top point-getter taking home the championship trophy. Following the 1967 season, the USSA split into four regional groups: the Western Surfing Association, the Eastern Surfing Association, the Hawaiian Surfing Association and the Gulf Coast Surfing Association. Winners of the 1967 United States Surfing Championship held in Huntington Beach, CA were Corky Carroll (men's), Joyce Hoffman (woman's) and Dru Harrison (juniors).

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service. Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence. When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

All the way back in 1888, an entrepreneur named Mr. French founded Maui Soda & Ice works. As part of the effort to eradicate the plague of 1900, they burned down their Kahalui facility and moved to the present Wailuku location. The company was a community icon supplying the island with locally produced ice and Coca Cola soda products when long-time company manager Manuel Nobriga took over in the 1940's. Manuel, who made his start by delivering ice to Kahului homes from a horse and wagon, always stressed the importance of ohana (family) in the workplace. For well over 100 years, Maui Soda & Ice Works continues to grow and serve the Maui community.
