Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Hawai’i’s original beer is back! The tradition of brewing beer on the Islands began with Honolulu’s Don Francisco de Paula Marin all the way back in 1812. In 1957 Half Moon Bay Airport became one of racing’s fastest, most attractive quarter-mile drag strips. Located just outside of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay Dragstrip, became the largest drag strip in Northern California offering bleachers, concession stands, a safety net, and a timing tower constructed from a bread van, to its many fans. Big name racers, including “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, attracted enthusiasts from across the United States to witness the historical race in which Garlits pulled off an unexpected win though Prudhomme’s name had been etched into the trophy even before the race took place. Although racing stopped in 1969, the nostalgic memories of Sunday morning’s roaring engines, wild cheering, and buzz of adrenaline-fueled excitement live on in the tales of drag racing.

Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii, and China.  In its earlier years, the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950.  In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name.  During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving airline industry technologies.  They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet.  By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds".  Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008.  Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. Although most youngsters did not go on to pursue surfing professionally, the friendships they forged and all the great memories would stay with them forever.

Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

Opened in 1963, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The 66-acre Raceway Park played host to both professional and amateur racing of funny cars, stock cars, dragsters, and motocross and more until its eventual shutdown in 2006. Over its active years, the park included a ¼ mile racing track, drag strip, as well as a motocross and BMX venue.
