They are believed to be descendants of birds freed when Hurricane Iwa in 1982 and Hurricane Iniki in 1992 destroyed coops. Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii and China.  In its earlier years the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950.  In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name.  During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving industry technologies.  They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet.  By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds".  Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008.  Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Surfer magazine called Makaha one of the “25 Best Waves in the World.” Hawaiian for “fierce,” Makaha is regarded in many circles as the home of big wave surfing, due in large part to the 30 foot wave that Greg “Da Bull” Noll caught in 1969. Until the advent of tow-in surfing, it was the largest wave ever ridden.

From 1954 to 1971, Makaha was home to the biggest surf competition of the day, the Makaha International Surfing Championships. Honolulu surfer and restaurant supplier John Lind created the winter contest, sponsored by the Waianae Lions Club and Waikiki Surf Club, to attract the world’s best surfers.

The three-fingered Shaka greeting widely used today among Hawaiians and others in the surfing community originated from a multitude of stories sharing a common theme: warmth and welcome when greeting another. One story says a man named Hamana Kalili, who worked at the sugar plantation, was involved in an unfortunate accident which severed his three middle fingers. Another legend tells of Tutu Hamana, a great Ali’i (chief) in the court and a man filled with aloha and kindness. When the guest would leave, Tutu Hamana would wave goodbye with his old, bent hand and the people, out of aloha, would wave back just like he did, with their 3 middle fingers down like shaka.

Christopher Columbus Smith was only 13 years old when he built his first wooden boat in 1874. He worked with his brother Henry and other innovators over the years before officially becoming Chris-Craft in 1924. Their mahogany hulled powerboats ruled American waterways from the 1920's on, in large part due to their assembly line manufacturing but also their sleek design. Chris-Craft boats are truly an American classic.
