Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. Fans went wild when the renowned National Scholastic Surfing Association secured nine of the ten competitor spots in the United States’ 1981 World Amateur Surfing Championships. In 1979, the United States Surfing Federation had unified six independent U.S. amateur surfing organizations, and NSSA reluctantly agreed to join. This elite group dominated the 1981 World Amateur Surfing Championships when they competed in Trestles, California. The United States World Surfing Association brings together the best surfers across the United States to compete in a new location with a new beach and fresh set of waves each year. In 1979, surfers rode the Texas shores, 1980 was Hawaii, and 1981, Trestles, California was where competitors surfed the swell.

After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Well-known cam grinder Ray Giovannoni opened the first speed shop in Washington, D.C. then in 1958, moved the business down to Port Orange, Florida, under the new name “Custom Automotive.” Specializing in selling Race Cams, Giovannoni’s dragsters began to rapidly increase in popularity as record-setting drag racers like Gary Cagle and Don Garlits placed top three in races held on the West Coast. Fans flocked to Riverside Drag Strip to witness the nation’s top dragsters while Giovannoni-equipped cars set astounding records of 175.78 MPH within 9.01 seconds. A monumental shift began in drag racing during 1960 as drag racing champions, both new and old, changed to the “Big G” NHRA-sanctioned Detroit Dragway in Michigan which was the location where Don Garlits smashed the 187.10 MPH record from Fremont, California, going 190.27 miles per hour in a Giovannoni-equipped car. This shocking achievement elicited waves of excitement from dragster fans and further increased Giovannoni’s popularity.

In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size.
