In 1957 Half Moon Bay Airport became one of racing’s fastest, most attractive quarter-mile drag strips. Located just outside of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay Dragstrip, became the largest drag strip in Northern California offering bleachers, concession stands, a safety net, and a timing tower constructed from a bread van, to its many fans. Big name racers, including “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, attracted enthusiasts from across the United States to witness the historical race in which Garlits pulled off an unexpected win though Prudhomme’s name had been etched into the trophy even before the race took place. Although racing stopped in 1969, the nostalgic memories of Sunday morning’s roaring engines, wild cheering, and buzz of adrenaline-fueled excitement live on in the tales of drag racing.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Lockheed Martin‘s history is full of over a century of innovation and ingenuity in aviation.  Back in 1912 in Los Angeles, California, Glenn L. Martin, was building his first aircraft in a rented church building, with the encouragement of Orville Wright.  400 miles North in San Francisco, brothers Allan and Malcolm Lockheed were developing seaplanes that would shatter records for distance and speed.  Both companies would continue to evolve over the next 80 years consistently producing some of the finest aircraft in the world mostly for military use.  This included the Stealth and Blackbird planes developed by Lockheed‘s secret Skunk Works division, and Martin creating everything from the P-38 Lightning plane to many of the rockets that helped propel the American space program.  The two companies merged in 1995 forming Lockheed Martin as an aviation powerhouse.  Today the company continues to develop a wide array of aircraft, aerospace, and defense products including the new F-35 Lightining, for which there is a flight simulator located at Pearl Harbor.

As the name suggests, Hawaii Country Club is in fact the oldest public golf course on the island of Oahu. Opened in 1958, Hawaii Country Club is located in the “Kunia district” among the majestic pineapple fields at the foot of the Waianae Mountain Range. While many new golf courses were built on defunct sugar can plantations, Hawaii Country Club was not. It preserves the natural topography of the land and captures the atmosphere of the good-old-days of Hawaii. On clear days, there are magnificent views of Pearl Harbor and Diamond head, and if you stay into the evening, you can see the beautiful city lights of Honolulu.

The Maui Country Club, founded in 1925, was the first real golf course to be opened on the Island of Maui.  Hawai’i territorial senator Harold W. Rice, Frank Fowler Baldwin, and the 46 member Maui Golf Association negotiated an agreement with the Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company for sixty-six acres of sugar cane fields, of which 60 acres would be used for a 9 hole golf course.  The club held its opening ceremonies on July 3, 1927, with the initial members consisting of 78 men and 10 women, with a membership fee of $50 per family and monthly dues of $2.75.  The private club still flourishes today in Spreckelsville, offering many fine amenities in a family friendly environment.

The Malibu Surf Club was founded in 1952 by a small but dedicated group of surfers that included such well-known members as Matt Kivlin, Les Williams, Joe and Aggie Quigg, Nina "Honeybear" Warren, and rat pack original - Peter Lawford. Kivlin designed the original lettering for the club logo which first appeared on a classic surf sweater with the sewn-on hood.

Beechcraft was founded in 1932 by husband and wife team Walter and Olive Ann Beech in Wichita, Kansas.  The Beech‘s along with designer Ted Wells began working out of an idle Cessna factory, developing the Model 17 Staggerwing.  The Staggerwing would have a production run of over 750 planes, including 270 made for the United States Air Forces during WWII.  Other popular models included the Model 18 and the revolutionary v-tailed Beechcraft Bonanza, which has been produced since 1947, giving it the longest production run of any airplane in history.  The fourth Bonanza ever built, called the ‘Waikiki Beech‘ set a non-stop distance record in 1949, flying from Honolulu, Hawaii to Teterboro, New Jersey.  Beechcraft was acquired by the Raytheon Company in 1980, and continued to change hands over the next few decades.  Beechcraft is now owned by Textron who also controls several other aviation names such as Cessna and Bell Helicopter.

Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival. They renamed themselves Maui Surf Club and held the First Annual Lahaina Invitational Surfboard Paddling Races, dated June 11, 1960.

As with many early air carriers, Western Airlines began in 1925 as a mail carrier service.  Based in California, Western went through many stages over its sixty plus year existence.  When it began serving as a commercial airline it initially focused on the Western United States.  In 1969 it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes.  During its prime in the 1970's and 1980's Western increased it's service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona.  In 1986 Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

Clyde Cessna built and flew his first airplane in 1911, just 8 years after the Wright Brothers first took to the skies.  He would continue to work on wood and fabric aircraft in the following years until founding the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company along with Victor Roos in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas.  Roos resigned after just one month with Cessna buying back his interest and beginning work on the Cessna DC-6.  The original Cessna brand was short lived with the Great Depression forcing it to shut down in 1932.  In 1934, Dwight and Dwayne Wallace took over the Cessna name and began establishing Cessna as one of the premier small aircraft companies in the world.  Although they did build some planes for Military use in WWII, Cessna quickly returned to commercial production in 1948, focusing on all-metal aircraft made from production parts, rather than the hand-built process.  In the following decades Cessna would introduce airplanes, such as the Cessna CH-1 and 172.  They would also develop a helicopter in 1955, and introduce their first jet in 1969.  Cessna continues to make  commercial airplanes, personal aircraft, and business class jets.  And, if you happen to fly Mokulele Airlines from one island to another in Hawaii, there is a good chance you'll be flying in a Cessna Caravan.

The Kona Inn was built by the Inter-Island Steamship Navigation Company in 1928 as a means to expand the growing Hawaiian tourism market to the Kona area.  Featuring a stunning setting on the coast, the Kona Inn  was originally a 20 room hotel that featured a saltwater pool, tennis courts, and a cocktail lounge.  At the time Kona was a highly remote destination and the Inn wasn't even able to have fresh water piped in until 1953.  Still, the Kona Inn remained a popular destination for adventurous visitors, and in particular, fisherman.  The Inn served as the unofficial headquarters for the billfish tournament as Kona developed a reputation as one of the premier marlin fishing areas in the world.  The Kona Inn stopped housing guests in 1976, but still remains a popular destination, largely due to the restaurant that opened in 1979 offering unmatched sunset views, and a premier dining experience.

Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii, and China.  In its earlier years, the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950.  In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name.  During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving airline industry technologies.  They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet.  By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds".  Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008.  Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989.  The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven.  Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw.  In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum.  A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?
