Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. There are also interstates H2 and H3, which completed in 1997, has arguably some of the most beautiful views of any US highway.

Clyde Cessna built and flew his first airplane in 1911, just 8 years after the Wright Brothers first took to the skies. He would continue to work on wood and fabric aircraft in the following years until founding the Cessna-Roos Aircraft Company along with Victor Roos in 1927 in Wichita, Kansas. Roos resigned after just one month with Cessna buying back his interest and beginning work on the Cessna DC-6. The original Cessna brand was short lived with the Great Depression forcing it to shut down in 1932. In 1934, Dwight and Dwayne Wallace took over the Cessna name and began establishing Cessna as one of the premier small aircraft companies in the world. Although they did build some planes for Military use in WWII, Cessna quickly returned to commercial production in 1948, focusing on all-metal aircraft made from production parts, rather than the hand-built process. In the following decades Cessna would introduce airplanes, such as the Cessna CH-1 and 172. They would also develop a helicopter in 1955, and introduce their first jet in 1969. Cessna continues to make commercial airplanes, personal aircraft, and business class jets. And, if you happen to fly Mokulele Airlines from one island to another in Hawaii, there is a good chance you'll be flying in a Cessna Caravan.

The three-fingered Shaka greeting widely used today among Hawaiians and others in the surfing community originated from a multitude of stories sharing a common theme: warmth and welcome when greeting another. One story says a man named Hamana Kalili, who worked at the sugar plantation, was involved in an unfortunate accident which severed his three middle fingers. Another legend tells of Tutu Hamana, a great Ali’i (chief) in the court and a man filled with aloha and kindness. When the guest would leave, Tutu Hamana would wave goodbye with his old, bent hand and the people, out of aloha, would wave back just like he did, with their 3 middle fingers down like shaka.

Laughter and live music poured out of the Blue Goose bar as people flocked to it. Located in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Blue Goose was a popular bar during the 1960s-70s for college students. Just down the road from the University of Hawaii on Oahu, the Blue Goose offered a full bar and live R&B musical performances. During the 1970s, a popular Hawaiian group called Jon & Randy played at the Blue Goose, drawing large crowds filling the bar to the brim. Although the Blue Goose bar closed its doors in the late 90s, the warm, welcoming spirit of Aloha lives on in the memories college students have of late nights, sticky floors and beautiful music.

Like many of the early fliers, American Airlines started as a conglomeration of smaller regional airlines whose primary business was delivering US Mail. When Northwest merged with Republic Airlines, it opened the domestic flight path for its popular Pacific routes, specifically Honolulu. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Maui is famous for its beauty and laid-back attitude, but the Valley Island also has a rich heritage in surfing. Its modern history can be traced back to the Ho'okipa Surfriders Club formed in 1935. The club held surfboard paddling races in Kahului Harbor on Kamehameha Day in 1939, and again in 1959 when surfing began a new revival. They renamed themselves Maui Surf Club and held the First Annual Lahaina Invitational Surfboard Paddling Races, dated June 11, 1960.

Though unofficial, it’s universally accepted on the Islands that Hawaii’s state fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. How on earth do you say that?! Pacific Southwest Airlines (PSA) soared to the skies in 1949 quickly becoming California’s favorite way to fly. With its famously low fares, bold personality and signature “smile” painted on every plane, PSA air travel was fun and accessible. Nicknamed “The World’s FriendliestAirline,” PSA was a trailblazer in low-cost air travel long before Southwest, leading the way withjet service, widebody aircraft and even a short-lived international route to Mexico. The airline expanded its fleet over the years, introducing jets like the Boeing 727 and briefly operating widebody Lockheed L-1011 TriStars. PSA merged with USAir in 1986 and was fully absorbed by 1988, leaving a legacy as a trailblazer in affordable air travel.

Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

With a stingingly fastpitch, the Maui Stingrays hit home their origins in Wailuku, Hawaii during 1993. They went on to win two league and division championships. Eager crowds flocked to Maehara Stadium, thrilled to cheer on their Hawaiian Islands baseball team. The Maui Stingrays played in the Hawaii Winter Baseball league, a professional baseball league sanctioned by Major League Baseball. In line with the powerful sting they delivered to their opponents, their logo features an intimidating stingray winding up for a wild pitch. The Maui Stingrays concluded their life season with a grand slam in 1997. Even with the ocean between them and the mainland, Hawaii boasted a proud fan base who loved the Maui Stingrays representing the islands in the world of baseball.

Founded in 2006, the Waikiki Beach Boys Baseball team was based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Waikiki Beachboys home games were played at the Les Murakami Baseball Stadium. Commemorating Hawaii’s famous “Beach Boys of Waikiki,” they honored their memory with their impressive performances earning three division championship titles and one league championship title. Their logo pays homage to the original Waikiki Beach Boys, a ripped surfer proudly standing in front of a surfboard and baseball. The Waikiki Beach Boys finished off their impressive season in 2008.

Montague Rod Company became the biggest producer of split bamboo rods when it bought out the Chubb Rod Company in 1900. Based out of Montague City, Massachusetts, the company produced everything a fisherman could dream of from spinning, trolling, casting, ocean rods, and fly rods. Montague acquired a large customer base as fisherman passed up on the fancy and sought out the durable, thus drawn to Montague’s reputation of built and priced for the everyday fisherman. Over the years, Montague built more than 300 different fly rod models. Introduced in the late 1920’s, Red Wing was known as the higher end models of Montague. Rapidan was commonly agreed to be the mid level and Sunbeam the most common lower level. Though the company experienced booming success over the years, Montague was forced to close in 1955 after a trade embargo was placed on Chinese goods, causing a shortage of quality bamboo. The legend of Montague continues in the fishing world as companies draw on the magnitude of innovative designs.

One story says a man named Hamana Kalili, who worked at the sugar plantation, was involved in an unfortunate accident which severed his three middle fingers. Another legend tells of Tutu Hamana, a great Ali’i (chief) in the court and a man filled with aloha and kindness. When the guest would leave, Tutu Hamana would wave goodbye with his old, bent hand and the people, out of aloha, would wave back just like he did, with their 3 middle fingers down like shaka.

In 1957 Half Moon Bay Airport became one of racing’s fastest, most attractive quarter-mile drag strips. Located just outside of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay Dragstrip, became the largest drag strip in Northern California offering bleachers, concession stands, a safety net, and a timing tower constructed from a bread van, to its many fans. Big name racers, including “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, attracted enthusiasts from across the United States to witness the historical race in which Garlits pulled off an unexpected win though Prudhomme’s name had been etched into the trophy even before the race took place. Although racing stopped in 1969, the nostalgic memories of Sunday morning’s roaring engines, wild cheering, and buzz of adrenaline-fueled excitement live on in the tales of drag racing.

Opened in 1962, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The 66-acre Raceway Park played host to both professional and amateur racing of funny cars, stock cars, dragsters, and motocross and more until its eventual shutdown in 2006. Over its active years, the park included a ¼ mile racing track, drag strip, as well as a motocross and BMX venue.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

In 1999 the Irwindale Speedway emerged, quickly followed by the opening of the ⅛-mile drag racing strip in 2001. Located in Southern California’s San Gabriel Valley, the Irwindale Dragstrip hosts legal drag races for cars, trucks, and motorcycles. A firm believer in abiding by street-legal automobiles, the drag strip proudly rejects the “nowhere else to go” notion practiced by illegal street racers. From 2003 to 2010, the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown competed on Irwindale Speedway’s ½-mile oval. This televised race included the top 30 drivers in the NASCAR K&N Pro series and the top 40 drivers in the NASCAR Whelen All-American series, attracting many car racing enthusiasts to what was known as the “best-of-the-best” race. Irwindale Speedway continues to be home to a diverse variety of car races from the Turkey Night Grand Prix to the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown to the Formula D Championship Series.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.
