While the baseball world bundled up for winter, Hawaii turned up the heat. From 1993 to 1997, and again from 2006 to 2008, Hawaii Winter Baseball brought rising stars from the U.S., Japan, Korea and beyond to the islands for a one-of-a-kind off-season league. With teams like the Honolulu Sharks, North Shore Honu and Hilo Stars, the league blended tropical vibes with top-tier talent. It became a launchpad for future MLB greats, including Ichiro Suzuki, Kenley Jansen and Gabe Kapler. Though the league eventually wrapped up, its legacy lives on as one of baseball’s most unique and scenic proving grounds.
