Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40-year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand Marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. The three-fingered Shaka greeting widely used today among Hawaiians and others in the surfing community originated from a multitude of stories sharing a common theme: warmth and welcome when greeting another. One story says a man named Hamana Kalili, who worked at the sugar plantation, was involved in an unfortunate accident which severed his three middle fingers. Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as  “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. Like many of the early fliers, American Airlines started as a conglomeration of smaller regional airlines whose primary business was delivering US Mail. After World War II, American expanded its passenger business, including transcontinental jet service and routes to Hawaii. By 1970 there was a direct flight from New York to Honolulu, offering many mainlanders their first chance to visit the beautiful Aloha State. A few years later in 1973, American became the first major airline to employ a female pilot. Throughout the years American Airlines has been a major innovator in aviation and helped spread Aloha around the globe.

Shaved ice has been a Hawaiian tradition ever since the plantation days. Hot, exhausted workers would shave a block of ice with a hand saw and flavor it with juice, which is basically the same way it's done today! The Aoki family has been making shave ice since the 1930's when the Shimoda family sold the cool treat in the old Haliewa Theater. After the theatre closed, Sumie Shimoda Aoki and her son Michael Aoki, opened up Aoki's Shave Ice in 1981. The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989.  The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven.  Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw.  In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum.  A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. In the mid 1950's Malibu was at the center of the surfing universe and a variety of surfboard manufacturers were popping up to fill the demand for quality surfboards.   Tom Flaherty was running a sailing and diving shop in Malibu at this time, and plunged into the fast growing market with boards he was personally shaping and glassing.  His craftsmanship quickly gained a following and Flaherty began employing guest shapers and glassers including names like Donald Takayama and Wayne Miyata.  The Flaherty continued to flourish in over the following decade with shops opening in Venice, Hollywood, the San Fernando Valley, and Waikiki Beach in Hawaii.  Flaherty was popular amongst serious surfers due to  his focus on designs that enhanced performance and also venturing in the use of new materials.  Flaherty was one of the first manufacturers to incorporate foam, allowing his boards to lose weight and gain maneuverability and speed.  Tom was also well known for producing some of the finest big wave guns of the era, capable of challenging the North Shore's most fierce waves.
