Greg Noll Surfboards was founded in 1951 in Manhattan Beach and later moved to Hermosa Beach in 1959 at which point it was the largest surfboard shop in the world. Nicknamed “Da Bull” for both his large physique and his hard-charging style, Greg Noll famously rode a 35-footer at Makaha on December 4, 1969 which remained the largest wave ever ridden for more than 20 years. In 1964, Greg Noll began to work with big-surf enthusiast, Charlie Galanto, shaping, refurbishing and creating boards. In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. Although most youngsters did not go on to pursue surfing professionally, the friendships they forged and all the great memories would stay with them forever.

Opened in 1963, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island’s Kona Coast. Today, when it comes to surf clubs, the Waikiki Surf Club is second to none.  Originally, there was the exclusive Outrigger Canoe Club, which consisted mostly of mainland-born haoles, and the Hui Nalu, whose membership included mainly native Hawaiians. All the way back in 1888, an entrepreneur named Mr. French founded Maui Soda & Ice works. As part of the effort to eradicate the plague of 1900, they burned down their Kahalui facility and moved to the present Wailuku location. The company was a community icon supplying the island with locally produced ice and Coca Cola soda products when long-time company manager Manuel Nobriga took over in the 1940's. The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989.  The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven.  Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw.  In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum.  A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

The famed Waikiki Beach Boys have been a significant part of Hawaiian beach culture since the early 1900s. Originally, the Beach Boys came into existence with the opening of the Moana Hotel in 1901, offering not only skilled instruction in canoeing and surfing to hotel guests but also an introduction to Hawaiian culture and a welcoming aloha spirit. In 1906, Edward “Dude” Miller helped to arrange a beach concession, offering the hotel guests a host of services to explore the beach and ocean.
