The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989.  The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven.  Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw.  In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum.  A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

A kaleidoscope snorkeling experience is located in the ancient volcanic cinder cone about 3 miles off Maui’s south shore- Molokini. This islet and the surrounding 77 underwater acres were announced a Marine Life Conservation District in 1977, thus protected by the federal government. Molokini’s unique shape was created during World War II when the United States Navy used Molokini for target practice. All the way back in 1888, an entrepreneur named Mr. French founded Maui Soda & Ice works. As part of the effort to eradicate the plague of 1900, they burned down their Kahalui facility and moved to the present Wailuku location. The company was a community icon supplying the island with locally produced ice and Coca Cola soda products when long-time company manager Manuel Nobriga took over in the 1940's. Manuel, who made his start by delivering ice to Kahului homes from a horse and wagon, always stressed the importance of ohana (family) in the workplace. Greg Noll Surfboards was founded in 1951 in Manhattan Beach and later moved to Hermosa Beach in 1959 at which point it was the largest surfboard shop in the world. Nicknamed “Da Bull” for both his large physique and his hard-charging style, Greg Noll famously rode a 35-footer at Makaha on December 4, 1969 which remained the largest wave ever ridden for more than 20 years. In 1964, Greg Noll began to work with big-surf enthusiast, Charlie Galanto, shaping, refurbishing and creating boards. In ancient Hawaii, the surf at Waikiki was second only to the Big Island’s Kona Coast. Originating in 1960, the Hawaiian Canoe Club began with John M. Lake and 25 other members with Hawaiian ancestry, with the christened Kokololio-Swift Winds of Waikapu- as the club’s first canoe. Growing in size, the club competed in its first state regatta in 1962, merging paddlers from Hawaiian, Kahului, and Lahaina canoe clubs to create the crews. Hawaiian Canoe Club advocated good relations with other canoe clubs by loaning canoes to other clubs, not only modeling the spirit of Aloha but increasing the popularity of the sport. After transitioning into racing primarily fiberglass canoes in 1967, the HCC won its first Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association Championship in 1985 and continued to win the title every year since. With the HCC still going strong today, leaders created Hawaiian Kamali’i, Inc., a program designed to educate children on Hawaiian culture, religion, navigation, traditional food preparation, and leadership. Opened in 1962, Hawaii Raceway Park thrilled the residents and visitors of Ewa Beach and the surrounding areas with world class racing events for 42 years. The beloved animated character Gumby was first created in the early 1950s by Art Clokey, who had been developing his clay animation techniques at the University of Southern California. In 1955, Clokey created a pilot featuring Gumby, which was immediately picked up by executives at NBC, who featured a Gumby short called ”Gumby on the Moon” on the Howdy Doody show in 1956. Gumby became an instant hit, and in 1957, Gumby had his own show that ran through the ‘50s and ‘60s. When you think of Hawaii, probably one of the last things you think of is race cars, but perhaps you should think twice about them. While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist.  Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala.  Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months.  Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing.  There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run.  The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964.  There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

The Hawaiian Masters was conceived and developed by Fred Hemmings three years after he won the 1968 World Surfing Championships. Held annually in December, the competition is home to one of the world's most explosive tubes breaking just 75 yards off the shore, allowing judges and spectators alike to have a great view. With a higher emphasis on tuberiding than other events, the competition became known as Pipeline Masters and has long been regarded as the world's top surfing contest. Hawaiian pro surfer Jeff Hackman won the first event in 1971, along with the $500 purse, and Pipeline legend Gerry Lopez won the next two years.
