Founded in 1960, NASH Skateboards paved the way for skaters the moment they introduced the “Goofy Foot Sidewalk Surfer” from their manufacturing plant in Fort Worth, Texas. It was one of the first original mass produced skateboards and people loved it! Business boomed as they sold in toy stores nationwide. Although they were marketed to kids as a toy, the plastic wheels and metal ball bearings made it a dangerous toy. The NASH Heat Zone skateboard had a completely plastic truck and axle, and the NASH Tenderfoot Wood Skateboard had steel wheels. Ouch if that runs over a toe! Frank Nasworthy's solution led to skateboarding becoming a legitimate competition sport. In 1970, Nasworthy introduced the urethane wheel providing a smoother, faster ride and a more maneuverable skateboard. NASH continued thriving in the skateboard manufacturing business. Although a fire in 2006 destroyed the manufacturing facility, the spirit of skateboarding cultivated by NASH Skateboards lives on in the world of skating and skate competition today.

The three-fingered Shaka greeting widely used today among Hawaiians and others in the surfing community originated from a multitude of stories sharing a common theme: warmth and welcome when greeting another. One story says a man named Hamana Kalili, who worked at the sugar plantation, was involved in an unfortunate accident which severed his three middle fingers. Another legend tells of Tutu Hamana, a great Ali’i (chief) in the court and a man filled with aloha and kindness. When the guest would leave, Tutu Hamana would wave goodbye with his old, bent hand and the people, out of aloha, would wave back just like he did, with their 3 middle fingers down like shaka.

Laughter and live music poured out of the Blue Goose bar as people flocked to it. Located in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Blue Goose was a popular bar during the 1960s-70s for college students. Just down the road from the University of Hawaii on Oahu, the Blue Goose offered a full bar and live R&B musical performances. During the 1970s, a popular Hawaiian group called Jon & Randy played at the Blue Goose, drawing large crowds filling the bar to the brim. Although the Blue Goose bar closed its doors in the late 90s, the warm, welcoming spirit of Aloha lives on in the memories college students have of late nights, sticky floors and beautiful music.

In the mid-1880s, Arthur “Doc” Irwin visited Jason Draper and John Maynard with a request that would change the face of baseball. The shortstop for the Providence Grays wanted the two to create something to protect his hand while playing baseball. Draper and Maynard fulfilled his request with the first glove, padding included, specifically designed for playing baseball. In 1881, the Draper & Maynard Company was off to a booming start, quickly escalating from solely producing deerskin glove markers to becoming a prosperous sporting goods manufacturer. Home to Draper & Maynard was The Plymouth Normal School in Plymouth, New Hampshire the center of the town where locals Draper and Maynard founded their company. D&M became one of the largest sporting good manufacturers in the country. Babe Ruth pitched 14 full innings for a 2-1 victory over the Brooklyn Dodgers to win the World Series, wearing a D&M glove.

Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Dragmaster offered anything a car fanatic could dream, from kits to turnkey cars, as well as their revered Streetster. Inspired by the T roadster, the pair introduced the Streetster, a T-bucket tube-frame chassis kit, an item that propelled the Dragster name to stardom. The single-engine Dragmaster chassis became their signature as the car claimed victory in the NHRA Nationals in both 1957 and 1958, resulting in a high demand for the Dragmaster cars. Roland Leong began racing thanks to Dragmaster. After Top Fuel dragsters were allowed to race in NHRA races in 1965, the pair ceased construction of Dragmaster dragster chassis and began transitioning into an automotive repair shop. Although Dragmaster was sold in 1995, the legendary Dragmaster cars live on in the spirit of drag racing and racers.

A monumental shift began in drag racing during 1960 as drag racing champions, both new and old, changed to the “Big G” NHRA-sanctioned Detroit Dragway in Michigan which was the location where Don Garlits smashed the 187.10 MPH record from Fremont, California, going 190.27 miles per hour in a Giovannoni-equipped car. Sundays in Western New York during the 1960's and early 70's were reserved for a day at the races. Originally known as Niagara Falls Airport Drag Strip, the track opened its gates in 1961 and quickly became one of drag racing’s hottest venues. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the New York State Championship Drag meet. 4500 plus avid drag racing fans flocked to the venue to cheer more than 224 races. Every season attracted legendary names to the bigger shows as Niagara Falls’s Deuces Wild car club became Niagara’s track crew and young drag racing pros began competing at the track. On July 10, 1964, Niagara Drag Strip was officially sanctioned for approval by the NHRA. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the legendary 1967 NASCAR Summer Nationals attracting racing fans from all over the country. Although Niagara Drag Strip closed its gates in 1974 due to complaints of raucous noise, the legendary drag strip lives on in the heart of racing as fans commemorate the monumental victories of the track.

Street racing burned rubber through Los Angeles, California during the 1950s drawing fans of all ages with raucous noise and adrenaline thrills to this all-American sport. Opening its gates in October 1955, Lions Drag Strip welcomed 15,000 people to witness cars race in the Wilmington district of sunny L.A. The Lions Club International sponsored the beloved track, hosting a variety of races licensed by the American Hot Rod Association. After consistently holding races every Sunday for the next two years, Mickey Thompson, the strip manager, proposed Saturday night racing, leading to a rapid escalation of young fans in attendance. The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Owning or operating a boat during the 1960s means you probably encountered the brightly colored instruction manual covering every operating and safety aspect of boating. The Outboard Boating Club of America was the public service sector of the non-profit industry trade association along with the Outboard Boat Manufacturers Association and the Outboard Motors Manufacturer Association. They published guides and instructional materials for boat owners while promoting outboard boating. In 1959, the OBC released their Standards Manual, citing motor, rigging, boat, and trailer standards for members of the trade organization, emphasizing the safety and reliability of its members’ products. OBC became organized under the Boating Industry Association which turned into the National Marine Manufacturers Association, today’s leading boat and marine engine trade association in the U.S.

Edward Fletcher and Co. began manufacturing men’s and boy's wear in Australia in 1939 and continued to be a common apparel brand for many decades. In 1972, the company saw an opportunity in the market to introduce a low cost, but well styled short which they called Stubbies. That same year, Stubbies went on to sell over 750,000 pairs, and by 1978 these shorts were so successful that the company officially changed its name to Stubbies Clothing Co. In the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s Stubbies sponsored a series of trial events in California, Hawaii and Florida to help contestants to qualify for the Stubbies Surf Classic. If you’re wondering about the name, legend says they were trying to come up with a name for the shorts and a tired salesmen got up and said, “This is thirsty work, I’m going out for a stubbie [of beer].” The name stuck.

Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.
