Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

So when hard working men and women needed comfortable clothes that would last, they bought Wichita Brand Overalls. Erwin Cotton Mills, founded in Durham, North Carolina in 1892, supplied the Erwin BluSerge Denim for these tough garments that came with lifetime guarantees and were “sanforized shrunk” to allow for minimum shrinkage after laundering. Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as “H1,” connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. There are also interstates H2 and H3, which completed in 1997, has arguably some of the most beautiful views of any US highway.

Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944. Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine. At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine. Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue. That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy. The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community. Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm). In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.

In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. Although most youngsters did not go on to pursue surfing professionally, the friendships they forged and all the great memories would stay with them forever.

Originally established in 1968 and founded by shaper Dave Garner, Plastic Fantastic Surfboards began a history that would span five decades, over half a dozen owners, and factories in 3 states. The name Plastic Fantastic was inspired by the Jefferson Airplane song “Plastic Fantastic Lover.” The original home for Plastic Fantastic was in Haleiwa, Hawaii from 1968 to 1970, followed by two more years of production at a different location on the North Shore. At the same time, Garner and Danny Calohan would open shop in Huntington Beach, California, and the company would employ a stable of gifted shapers through the years, including Skip Frye, Jock Sutherland, Robert August, Bruce Jones, and Barry Kanaiaupuni. From 1968 to 2003 it is estimated that Plastic Fantastic produced approximately 55,000 surfboards.

Academy award nominated director, Bruce Brown spent two years chasing summer around the world and capturing footage that set the standard for all future surf films. The Malibu Surf Club was founded in 1952 by a small but dedicated group of surfers that included such well-known members as Matt Kivlin, Les Williams, Joe and Aggie Quigg, Nina "Honeybear" Warren, and rat pack original - Peter Lawford. In the Hawaiian language, Lahaina means “merciless sun” characterizing the arid climate. Legend has it, a bald ali’i (chief) was walking without a hat feeling the relentless sun beating down on his head, looking upwards he cursed the sun. During the 19th century, Lahaina became the center of the global whaling industry. Although Lahaina was the capital of Hawaii in the early 1800s, the capital was moved back to Honolulu in 1845 because it offered a deeper harbor for the growing number of whaling ships. Eventually, Lahaina became a favorite tourist destination, immersing visitors in its incredible natural beauty and educating them on native Hawaiian culture. Sadly, in August 2023, a wildfire decimated most of Lahaina. More than 11,000 people had to evacuate. The Pacific Disaster Center estimates the damage around $5.52 billion. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lahaina during recovery.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

After World War II, American expanded its passenger business, including transcontinental jet service and routes to Hawaii. By 1970 there was a direct flight from New York to Honolulu, offering many mainlanders their first chance to visit the beautiful Aloha State. A few years later in 1973, American became the first major airline to employ a female pilot. Throughout the years American Airlines has been a major innovator in aviation and helped spread Aloha around the globe.

Number One to the Sun. Soaring to the skies in 1926, Eastern Airlines became one of the “Big Four '' domestic airlines, maintaining a near monopoly in flights between New York and Florida from 1930 to 1950. The Big Four airlines were created by the Spoils Conferences of 1930 and became the dominant airlines in United States air travel. Customer satisfaction was optimal and Eastern proudly stood by its “We want everyone to fly” slogan. They were the official airline of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, proudly representing Florida in the skies. Deregulation during the 1980s took a toll financially on Eastern Airlines and the airline was forced to retire in 1991 after labor disputes. Although Eastern Airlines is no longer in the skies, its legendary contributions live on in the world of flying today.

Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii, and China. In its earlier years, the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950. In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name. During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving airline industry technologies. They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet. By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds". Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008. Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

When Northwest merged with Republic Airlines, it opened the domestic flight path for its popular Pacific routes, specifically Honolulu. Northwest dominated the global flight network as it established a presence in Europe, East Asia, Alaska, Tokyo and throughout the United States. The fact that Northwest carried more passengers across the Pacific Ocean than any other U.S. carrier proves the accuracy of their tagline “Now you’re flying smart”. Northwest Airlines built their esteemed reputation as flying one of the largest domestic route networks in the United States as well as carrying more domestic air cargo than any other American passenger airlines. Northwest Airlines flourished, eventually merging with Delta Air Lines Inc. on October 29, 2008, to continue offering premier flying services around the world.
