Faster than an airplane taking off at 177 miles per hour, a dragster can accelerate to 338 miles per hour which made York Airport in Thomasville, Pennsylvania a top notch venue for the York U.S. 30 dragway. The race track operated at this active airport from 1965 until 1979 and hosted some of the most notable events in drag racing. One of them being the 1965 Super Stock Nationals, nicknamed “The Woodstock of Drag Racing” after an astounding attendance was accomplished. This track attracted some of the biggest names in drag racing, including Dave Stickler of York who raced his revered Chevrolets from the Ammon R. Smith Autom Company dealership and Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins who was the Technical Director of the York track and later became a World and National Champion.

In 1927, Joseph Martin created what would become one of America’s most renowned fishing lures. Martin Fish Lure, based in Seattle, Washington, produced a wide variety of lures, such as fly rod poppers, pikes, and injured minnows. Martin Fish Lure was revered for its salmon plugs and quickly became the country’s largest producer. The company primarily focused on saltwater models, like the Model 77, Jetty Model, and the Atom look-alike. The Martin Injured Minnow Lure was manufactured in the 1930's and the company prospered from the successful lures like the Creek Chub Injured Minnow and the Heddon SOS constructed from wood. Although Joseph passed away in 1943, Martin Fish Lure continued to prosper into the 1980's. To this day, the most antique Martin Lures have a frog spot stenciled in red on the belly of the lure. Nestled off the Los Angeles coastline, Santa Catalina Island was home to the Catalina Grand Prix, a popular 100-mile invitation-only motorcycle race. Competitors and fans boarded planes and boats to attend races held annually from 1951 to 1958. Motorcycling races were divided into two classes 250cc and over 250cc. While the 250cc race was 60 miles in total, the race for the bikes over 250cc was a laborious 100 miles. Elite members of the American Motorcycle Association competed in this demanding race as well as celebrities like Dave Ekins, Keenan Wynn, Steve McQueen, and Lee Marvin. Despite the raging success of the race and economic benefit it provided Catalina Island, multiple state and federal agencies found faults with the race and denied permits for any future events of its liking. The liveliness and the spirit cultivated by the wild motorcycle race will live on, ingrained in motorcycle culture.

Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Dragmaster offered anything a car fanatic could dream, from kits to turnkey cars, as well as their revered Streetster. Inspired by the T roadster, the pair introduced the Streetster, a T-bucket tube-frame chassis kit, an item that propelled the Dragster name to stardom. The single-engine Dragmaster chassis became their signature as the car claimed victory in the NHRA Nationals in both 1957 and 1958, resulting in a high demand for the Dragmaster cars. Roland Leong began racing thanks to Dragmaster. After Top Fuel dragsters were allowed to race in NHRA races in 1965, the pair ceased construction of Dragmaster dragster chassis and began transitioning into an automotive repair shop. Although Dragmaster was sold in 1995, the legendary Dragmaster cars live on in the spirit of drag racing and racers.

Founded in 1960, NASH Skateboards paved the way for skaters the moment they introduced the “Goofy Foot Sidewalk Surfer” from their manufacturing plant in Fort Worth, Texas. It was one of the first original mass produced skateboards and people loved it! Business boomed as they sold in toy stores nationwide. Although they were marketed to kids as a toy, the plastic wheels and metal ball bearings made it a dangerous toy. The NASH Heat Zone skateboard had a completely plastic truck and axle, and the NASH Tenderfoot Wood Skateboard had steel wheels. Ouch if that runs over a toe! Frank Nasworthy's solution led to skateboarding becoming a legitimate competition sport. In 1970, Nasworthy introduced the urethane wheel providing a smoother, faster ride and a more maneuverable skateboard. NASH continued thriving in the skateboard manufacturing business. Although a fire in 2006 destroyed the manufacturing facility, the spirit of skateboarding cultivated by NASH Skateboards lives on in the world of skating and skate competition today.

Fishermen go fast to get there, then slow to catch them. Oliver Corporations catered to the needs of these fishermen with their innovative outboard boat motor design. Located in Battlecreek, Michigan, the Oliver Corporation was a major manufacturer of industrial and farm equipment with an impressive international distribution network. Originating in 1924, the business was soon booming as farmers eagerly purchased their Oliver tractors. The corporation continued to introduce innovative lines of tractors, including diesel engines then gasoline and eventually a compact utility tractor. In 1954, the Oliver Corporation expanded its markets and acquired Chris Craft’s outboard boat motors tooling, intent on modernizing and renovating the motor design. The “J” Challenger and “K” Commander were released in 1955, a hot-ticket item on the market because of Oliver’s established reputation as a reputable industrial manufacturer. Although the Oliver Corporation was purchased by Perkins Ltd. based out of Peterborough, England, the legendary Oliver motors continue to live on in the boats of fishermen and tractors of farmers.

Whether for a wild joyride through the winter snow or transportation to work during the frigid winter months, Moto-Ski was there providing their revered snowmobiles. The snowmobile brand was first manufactured in 1963 by Les Industries Bouchard and then purchased by Giffen in 1968. The famed “Tougher Seven Ways” advertisement fueled its popularity among those living in the snow, as it not only featured a Moto-Ski on a roller coaster but also navigating the rough terrain of a creek bed. Soon enough, the snowmobile was well-known for its durability and reliability. By the early 1970s, Moto-Ski was the second best-selling snowmobile brand in Canada and third in the world. Although Moto-Ski originally listed snowmobiles by engine size and year rather than model name, they eventually adopted the naming trend. Revered Moto-Ski snowmobiles include the Grand Prix, Nuvik, Super-Sonic, Spirit, and Cadet. Moto-Ski boomed in business until its doors came to a close in 1985, yet their fame in the wintry world of snowmobiles is commemorated in the make of many snowmobiles today.

Founded in the mid 1980s by Frank Hawk, the National Skateboard Association made competition, once again, a priority for skaters. NSA was a proud host to many skate competitions during the 1980s to the 1990s, but as participation began to dwindle, the association was forced to shutdown. Around this time, various famous skaters made their mark in competition through one of the two most common skating styles of the time- freestyle and vert. Rodney Mullen, a freestyle champion, revived and perfected the kickflip, becoming one of the most notorious street skaters in skate history. Tony Hawk, son of Frank Hawk, prevailed in vert skating and became an internationally recognized, professional skater. Gathering at skateparks was a popular pastime among many Hawaiians as riding a skateboard was similar to riding a surfboard. Originating in 1977, Kona Skatepark continues to be the longest remaining private skatepark in the world with activities ranging from lessons to week long skate camps, and includes a snake run, vert ramp, street course, and numerous pools.

MARX Toys founded in 1919 by Louis Marx became an empire as the largest toy manufacturer in the world. During the height of the Great Depression in the 1930's, people were destitute while Marx saw opportunity. He opened factories in Gerard and Erie, Pennsylvania, as well as Marx Toy’s largest factory in Glen Dale, West Virginia. Louis brought to life the toys children dreamed in their imagination, attracting eager boys and girls from all over the United States to Marx products. During the 1950's, Marx Toys achieved the pinnacle of largest toy manufacturer in the world with more than 1/3 of all toys in the United States. Louis “The Toy King'' was featured on the 1955 cover of Time, magazine illustrating how impressive were his astonishing achievements. In 1972, Louis turned 76 and sold his toy company. Yet, it turned out that Louis had been the one with the special touch with toys and the ability to produce wonders that children love. Although Marx Toys no longer exists, the memories endure in the Marx Toys that commemorate the eternal wonders of the toy world kingdom.

In the late 1950's, Waikiki Surf Club member Clarence Maki was inspired to create an organization for juniors to participate in surf contests. The "Surf Club Hawaii" was officially formed and offered its members monthly surfing and paddling contests, as well as an annual surfing championship held for the public. The contest held in 1961 was a rousing success, which signaled the start of 12 years if excitement for the young surfers of Hawaii. Although most youngsters did not go on to pursue surfing professionally, the friendships they forged and all the great memories would stay with them forever.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

Introduced in 1995, WEBCO’s Frame & Fork set offered an innovative design with cantilever brake mounts, novel drop-out design and a newly shaped seat. These bikes were designed by winners for winners. Known as “The Fastest Bike in Europe” WEBCO’s BMX racing team became home to many European Masters Champions, including the revered Jamie Staff. From 1915 to 1921, Hawaiian counties issued license plates yearly until 1922, in which a multitude of counties in the Territory of Hawaii unified to discuss the distribution of license plates. Throughout their history, Hawaiian license plates have gone through a variety of alterations and materials, ranging from wood to porcelain to steel-embossed with swordfish, automobile, and surfer-shaped expiration tags. Hawaiian license plates manufactured in 1976 were the first to display print on retro-reflective foil. The first graphic to be featured on Hawaiian license plates was the territory’s name, stamped on the license plate in a South Pacific font. After Hawaii became an official state in 1959, the slogan became “Aloha State.” The tv-show Hawaii Five-O popularized Hawaiian license plates beginning in 1968 and, continued the trend through 1988 with the tv-show Magnum P.I. displaying the Aloha State warrior license plate on a red Ferrari 308 GTS featuring the number ROBIN 1. Although vintage Hawaiian license plates have reached high demand in recent years, they are difficult to procure as steel license plates have been destroyed by the salt from the ocean.

Founded in 1989, the Hawaiian Longboard Surfing Association (HLSA) hosted many longboard surfing contests that invited, and even celebrated, amateurs rather than just professionals. Originally formed to promote local, national and even international amateur competition in longboard surfing, the club truly valued the beauty, strength and athleticism it takes to skillfully ride and maneuver a longboard. HLSA’s home base was at ‘Ewa Beach in Oahu, Hawaii. This meant that although it was not located in a densely populated town, it was still close enough to be easily accessible to many which aligned with the club’s goal of inclusivity and sharing education on the sport of longboarding. Notable surfing professionals also competed, like Rabbit Kekai, who made waves in the surfing world when he competed in an HLSA competition in 1994.

On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist. Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months. Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing. There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run. The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964. There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they were screen printing upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right?

Academy award nominated director, Bruce Brown spent two years chasing summer around the world and capturing footage that set the standard for all future surf films. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In 1879 Hawaiian ukulele design and production was changed forever with the emigration of Manuel Nunes from Madeira to Hawaii, for he became known as the “Inventor of the Original Ukulele,” as listed in the 1916 city directory. Upon arrival, although the Portugese Consul General in Hawaii recorded Nunes as a laborer due to a few years of plantation work, in 1889, Nunes became listed as a guitar maker, beginning his mission to popularize the instrument known as the ukulele. In 1910, Manuel Nunes established M. Nunes and Sons with Leonardo and Julius Nunes, who eventually used the skills they inherited in their apprenticeship to start their own ukulele manufacturing businesses. Nunes constructed a ukulele empire that stayed in business for more than 40 years, manufacturing handmade instruments with the label “M. Nunes, Inventor of the Ukulele and Taro Patch Fiddles in Honolulu in 1879.” While Julius returned to work at the company with his father, Leonardo moved to Los Angeles, introducing the Hawaiian ukulele to new mainland customers. In 1922, Manuel Nunes died at the age of 79, leaving behind an enduring mark on Hawaiian culture with the soulful, resonant music strummed on the Hawaiian ukulele.

In 1961 Floyd Smith, a surfboard manufacturer based in San Diego, California, began printing his company logo on white shirts local surfers brought into Gordon & Smith Surfboards, and the surfer t-shirt was born. By the end of the year, the emerging market in silk-screen printing allowed printing of five-color O’Neill Surf Shop t-shirts and single-color Makaha International Surfing Championships t-shirts. After three years, surf company t-shirts were being produced by the tens of thousands as the market widely expanded to include surf industry team t-shirts and competitor t-shirts for entrants in surf competitions. During the mid-70s, surfer shirts by the California T-Shirts company were available in department stores throughout America and, by 2002, the production of surfer t-shirts had swelled to 300 million shirts annually. Their popularity skyrocketed as the entertainment industry modeled them through Mackenzie Phillips in American Graffiti and Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now. Today, surfer t-shirts continue to thrive worldwide and remind people of the rich history and blessing of surfing.
