The first person to write about Hawaii and surfing was British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778 after seeing Hawaiian wave-riders at the Big Island’s Kealakekua Bay. Cook’s stories of the wonders that he saw and the people that he encountered excited the entire continent of Europe. In many books, such as Polynesian Researches written by William Ellis in 1859, stories of Cook’s travels were brought to life in etchings, a drawing technique in which artists would use strong acid or mordant to cut into metal surfaces to create a design.

Today the sport of surfing and its cultural impact is felt all around the globe. Surfing was an integral part of life among native Hawaiians when Europeans began to arrive in the late 18th century. After being labeled as a taboo by Missionaries, surfing had a major resurgence in the mid 1900s. The history of surfing can be seen through the evolution of Hawaiian surfboards from the ancient paipo to the modern shortboard. Lifesize replicas of many of these boards are on display in the Malibu Shirts surf museum, including those shaped by the legendary Dale Velzy.

The Grand Hotel in Wailuku Maui opened in 1916 and was considered the premier hotel on Maui. Designed by Honolulu architect, J. Holmberg, the hotel featured a spacious lobby and dining room as well as a wrap around lanai. In 1929 the "Maui Grand," as it was now called, underwent an extensive renovation adding an entirely new 25 room wing, bringing the total rooms to 61, making it the largest hotel in Maui County through the end of WWII. The hotel remained open through the early 1960's.

The famed Waikiki Beach Boys have been a significant part of Hawaiian beach culture since the early 1900s. Originally, the Beach Boys came into existence with the opening of the Moana Hotel in 1901, offering not only skilled instruction in canoeing and surfing to hotel guests but also an introduction to Hawaiian culture and a welcoming aloha spirit. In 1906, Edward “Dude” Miller helped to arrange a beach concession, offering the hotel guests a host of services to explore the beach and ocean. Many of the Beach Boys were pulled from the Hui Nalu and were held to a strict code of conduct including no drinking, no gambling, being clean shaven and keeping their hands off female guests. The Beach Boys also took it upon themselves to keep the beaches safe and clean for visitors and kama’aina alike. Some of the best known and most beloved Beach Boys included Blue Makua Sr., Duke Kahanamoku, Sam Kahanamoku, Rabbit Kekai, Steamboat Mokuahi, and Panama Dave.

Today, the three-hour drive to Hana is a popular tourist attraction, famous for its rich cultural history and exquisite natural landscapes. In 1962, the Hana Highway formed when 52 miles of land were paved to connect Kahului in east Maui to Hana. Although 56 one-lane bridges and 617 curves in the road make the highway a famed tourist attraction, the historical sites along the drive are a window into Maui’s cultural past. Popular sites include the cave where the wife of Hawaii’s King Kamehameha I, Queen Ka’ahumanu, was birthed, and the grave and home of Charles Lindbergh, the first American aviator to fly the world’s first transatlantic flight. The beloved animated character Gumby was first created in the early 1950s by Art Clokey, who had been developing his clay animation techniques at the University of Southern California. In 1955, Clokey created a pilot featuring Gumby, which was immediately picked up by executives at NBC, who featured a Gumby short called ”Gumby on the Moon” on the Howdy Doody show in 1956. Gumby became an instant hit, and in 1957, Gumby had his own show that ran through the ‘50s and ‘60s. Gumby was later revived in 1988, with a new set of adventures, once again following Gumby and his friends through a variety of locations and historical times. In one episode in the original series, Gumby and Pokey believe they are stowing away in a box headed for Hawaii. Once they reach their destination they find that somehow they have ended up in the middle of Alaska rather than a tropical paradise.

Originally founded in 1946 under the name Trans-Pacific Airlines, Aloha Airlines was launched by Ruddy F Tongg, Sr. with the concept of having an airline to connect California, Hawaii and China.  In its earlier years the company was focused primarily on inter-island flights in Hawaii and its service quickly led to the airline earning the nickname "The Aloha Airline", a name which was incorporated into the official name TPA-The Aloha Airline in 1950.  In 1958, the company dropped the TPA portion of its name and would move into the future under the Aloha Airlines name.  During the late 50's and into the 60's, Aloha Airlines would remain near the front of the rapidly evolving industry technologies.  They were the second airline in the United States to move completely to a strictly turbine operated fleet.  By 1966 they were already making the push into an all-jet fleet that would eventually feature Boeing 737-200 jets that were fondly nicknamed "Funbirds".  Aloha would continue to offer inter-island service as well as flights to the US Mainland until it eventually ceased operation in 2008.  Although Aloha Airlines no longer operates it played a significant role in Hawaii's aviation history and opened up access to Hawaii's islands to generations of passengers.

Like many of the early fliers, American Airlines started as a conglomeration of smaller regional airlines whose primary business was delivering US Mail. After World War II, American expanded its passenger business, including transcontinental jet service and routes to Hawaii. By 1970 there was a direct flight from New York to Honolulu, offering many mainlanders their first chance to visit the beautiful Aloha State. A few years later in 1973, American became the first major airline to employ a female pilot. Throughout the years American Airlines has been a major innovator in aviation and helped spread Aloha around the globe.
