Originating in the 1920s in California and Hawaii, dog surfing has become a popular world-wide phenomenon, drawing in crowds eager to see dogs trained to surf on bodyboards and surfboards, either with a human or solo. On the Waves in Waikiki , a silent film released in the 1930s, showcases Phillip K. Auna and his terrier Night Hawk, who is able to hang ten while surfing with his owner. In the 1950s, a photograph of Joseph “Scooter Boy” Kaopuiki and Sandy, his dog, surfing in Hawaii was published in UPI and distributed throughout the United States. In 2006, at Imperial Beach in California, the first Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition was held and, today, continues to be the largest dog surfing competition in the U.S. When competing in canine surfing competitions, dogs are judged based on board size, dog’s confidence, and wave length and size. Competitors are able to register their dog in categories ranging from single or tandem surfing to dog size. Hawaii offers a host of dog friendly beaches from the beloved Waikiki Beach in Honolulu to Kailua Beach located near a dog-friendly mall to Kalapaki Beach, home to the popular Freddie’s Dog Park.

Dragmaster, the acclaimed drag racing team originating in 1954, was established when Dode Martin and Jim Nelson partnered with the shared goal of constructing dragsters and race cars for the swiftly growing sport. Dragmaster offered anything a car fanatic could dream, from kits to turnkey cars, as well as their revered Streetster. Inspired by the T roadster, the pair introduced the Streetster, a T-bucket tube-frame chassis kit, an item that propelled the Dragster name to stardom. The single-engine Dragmaster chassis became their signature as the car claimed victory in the NHRA Nationals in both 1957 and 1958, resulting in a high demand for the Dragmaster cars. Roland Leong began racing thanks to Dragmaster. After Top Fuel dragsters were allowed to race in NHRA races in 1965, the pair ceased construction of Dragmaster dragster chassis and began transitioning into an automotive repair shop. Although Dragmaster was sold in 1995, the legendary Dragmaster cars live on in the spirit of drag racing and racers.

At the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s, business was booming at the races as a multitude of radio ads sparked interest among pop radio station listeners in San Francisco Bay, beckoning them to the thrill of the competitions. Races fueled the economy in the surrounding area as thousands of fans were eager to witness world-record performances by Don “The Snake” Prudhomme, “Big Daddy” Don Garlits, Connie Kalitta, and more. Many champions heralded the low humidity air from the San Francisco Bay that allowed them to acquire astounding speeds. Well-known cam grinder Ray Giovannoni opened the first speed shop in Washington, D.C. then in 1958, moved the business down to Port Orange, Florida, under the new name “Custom Automotive.” Specializing in selling Race Cams, Giovannoni’s dragsters began to rapidly increase in popularity as record-setting drag racers like Gary Cagle and Don Garlits placed top three in races held on the West Coast. Fans flocked to Riverside Drag Strip to witness the nation’s top dragsters while Giovannoni-equipped cars set astounding records of 175.78 MPH within 9.01 seconds. A monumental shift began in drag racing during 1960 as drag racing champions, both new and old, changed to the “Big G” NHRA-sanctioned Detroit Dragway in Michigan which was the location where Don Garlits smashed the 187.10 MPH record from Fremont, California, going 190.27 miles per hour in a Giovannoni-equipped car. This shocking achievement elicited waves of excitement from dragster fans and further increased Giovannoni’s popularity.

Sundays in Western New York during the 1960's and early 70's were reserved for a day at the races. Originally known as Niagara Falls Airport Drag Strip, the track opened its gates in 1961 and quickly became one of drag racing’s hottest venues. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the New York State Championship Drag meet. 4500 plus avid drag racing fans flocked to the venue to cheer more than 224 races. Every season attracted legendary names to the bigger shows as Niagara Falls’s Deuces Wild car club became Niagara’s track crew and young drag racing pros began competing at the track. On July 10, 1964, Niagara Drag Strip was officially sanctioned for approval by the NHRA. Niagara Drag Strip hosted the legendary 1967 NASCAR Summer Nationals attracting racing fans from all over the country. Although Niagara Drag Strip closed its gates in 1974 due to complaints of raucous noise, the legendary drag strip lives on in the heart of racing as fans commemorate the monumental victories of the track.

The drag strip thrived until 1972 when it was torn down to allow space for shipping cargo containers overseas. The memory of Lions Drag Strip cruises on today being honored through pop culture with comedians paying tribute to announcer Larry Huffman’s wired announcing style, in television series like The Munsters and MadMen , and Brad Pitt’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wearing a Lions Drag Strip t-shirt.

Roland "The Hawaiian" Leong is one of the legendary figures in racing, whose over 40-year career as a driver, owner and crew chief for funny cars and dragsters has made him one of the sport's greats. Eleven different drivers accounted for his 23 national event wins. In 2005, he was inducted into the International Drag Racing Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was Grand Marshal of the 15th Annual Hot Rod Reunion. Trans World Airlines history dates all the way back to 1930 when they had the aviation pioneers like Charles Lindbergh and Jack Frye helping them build their brand as “The Airline Run by Flyers.” TWA was the chief rival to Pan American Airways for international travel, beginning in the 1940's. Their all-jet fleet was recognized all over the world and their trailblazing contributions to airport design helped revolutionize the industry. TWA went through multiple bankruptcies in the 1990's before merging with American Airlines in 2001.

Rick Griffin was a highly gifted cartoonist and artist born in Palos Verdes, California in 1944. Griffin was surfing by age 12 and developing his artistic skills by copying the cartoons in Mad magazine. At the age of sixteen, Griffin met John Severson, who had just recently released the first issue of Surfer Magazine. Severson saw the potential in Griffin's work and agreed to put Griffin's cartoon strip, "The Gremmies" in the next issue. That cartoon was followed by a mop-haired, wide-grinned character called Murphy. The beloved Murphy series ran in every issue of Surfer until late 1964, becoming somewhat of an unofficial mascot of the global surfing community. Beyond cartooning, Rick Griffin is also known as one of the psychedelia art movement's pioneers, with some of his best known work coming on album covers such as The Grateful Dead (Aoxomoxoa), The Eagles (On the Border), Jackson Browne (Late for the Sky), and a popular album cover featuring a surfing eyeball on the Chris Darrow & Max Buda album (Eye of the Storm). In several pieces of his work for The Grateful Dead, the surf themes from Griffin's youth can be seen merging with his counter culture art in the form of surfing skeletons and psychedelic waves.

In the Hawaiian language, Lahaina means “merciless sun” characterizing the arid climate. Legend has it, a bald ali’i (chief) was walking without a hat feeling the relentless sun beating down on his head, looking upwards he cursed the sun. During the 19th century, Lahaina became the center of the global whaling industry. Although Lahaina was the capital of Hawaii in the early 1800s, the capital was moved back to Honolulu in 1845 because it offered a deeper harbor for the growing number of whaling ships. Eventually, Lahaina became a favorite tourist destination, immersing visitors in its incredible natural beauty and educating them on native Hawaiian culture. Sadly, in August 2023, a wildfire decimated most of Lahaina. More than 11,000 people had to evacuate. The Pacific Disaster Center estimates the damage around $5.52 billion. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lahaina during recovery.

Continuously uncovering curiosities for humankind, NASA is on the forefront of space exploration and the evolving art of flight. Established in 1958, NASA is headquartered in Washington, D.C. with 10 field centers spread throughout the United States. In response to the world’s race to uncover the mysteries of space, NASA launched 135 missions between 1981 and 2011, all lifting off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Hawaii has been an instrumental player in NASA’s space travels, from being a key part of landing a man on the moon to being a first port of call for astronauts returning home from the moon. The global Spacecraft Tracking and Data Network, comprising numerous tracking stations throughout the world, facilitated communications with the first orbiting astronauts involved in Project Mercury. Located in Kōkee State Park on the Garden Isle of Kauai, the station first served Project Mercury, then the Gemini Program. Today, the station is used for NASA’s Goddard Crustal Dynamics Project and the US Naval Observatory. While NASA’s main training base, The Johnson’s Center is located in Houston, Texas, the Big Island’s lava fields are another prime training spot. The volcanic terrain simulates what a mission to Mars would look like. While the mainland is home to NASA’s headquarters and numerous field centers, Hawaii serves as an integral part of NASA’s endeavors, facilitating and aiding in space travel.
