Founded in 1961 by Gordon "Grubby" Clark in Laguna Niguel, California, Clark Foam revolutionized the surfing industry by producing polyurethane foam blanks. These blanks provided a basic surfboard construction for shapers to refine into their own individual models, and the blanks themselves were actually designed for Clark by such legendary shapers as Dale Velzy and Dick Brewer. At one point before closing in 2005, it is estimated that Clark supplied about 90% of all surfboard blanks in the entire world.

Known as "The Hawk", Dale is a surfer, a celebrity, a hell-raising rebel, a revolutionary retailer, a hall of fame surfer, a surf film financier, a lifeguard, and most of all, a shaper. A master shaper in his own right, Joe Quigg said, "You couldn't even sell a board in the sixties unless it looked like a Velzy board." Dale opened Velzy Surfboards (the world's first surf shop) in Manhattan Beach in 1949, and within years had shops all along Southern California's coast, and in Hawaii. Dale was so influential that a stretch of Hawaii's famous North Shore - now known as Velzyland - was named in his honor. In his 50 plus years of building boards for the best surfers the sport has ever known, Dale designed dozens of surfboards, each revolutionizing surfing in its own way.

The origins of the Hilo Hotel began in 1840, when prominent Hilo businessman, Benjamin Pitman built a mansion in an area known as Niopola, which was one of the favored resort spots of ancient Hawaiian royalty. After changing hands several times the mansion was replaced by the Hilo Hotel in 1888. The original hotel featured a two-story sprawling main building with several cottages connected to it by long verandas. The original hotel was torn down in 1956 and replaced with the ”new“ Hilo Hotel about 2 years later. That incarnation of the Hilo Hotel remained open until the hotel finally closed for good in the 1990’s.

The famed Waikiki Beach Boys have been a significant part of Hawaiian beach culture since the early 1900s. Originally, the Beach Boys came into existence with the opening of the Moana Hotel in 1901, offering not only skilled instruction in canoeing and surfing to hotel guests but also an introduction to Hawaiian culture and a welcoming aloha spirit. In 1906, Edward “Dude” Miller helped to arrange a beach concession, offering the hotel guests a host of services to explore the beach and ocean. Many of the Beach Boys were pulled from the Hui Nalu and were held to a strict code of conduct including no drinking, no gambling, being clean shaven and keeping their hands off female guests. The Beach Boys also took it upon themselves to keep the beaches safe and clean for visitors and kama’aina alike. Some of the best known and most beloved Beach Boys included Blue Makua Sr., Duke Kahanamoku, Sam Kahanamoku, Rabbit Kekai, Steamboat Mokuahi, and Panama Dave.

The Strong Current Surf Shop has been a staple on the North Shore since 1989. The shop was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Johnny and Bonnie Moore, who left New Jersey for a slice of Hawaiian heaven. Originally the shop sold surfboards, surfboard accessories and apparel, but it quickly became evident that their apparel, which they screen printed upstairs from their shop, was the big draw. In 1993 the shop also became the home for the Hale'iwa Surf Museum. A surf museum in an apparel store, what a crazy idea, right? ;)

Though unofficial, it’s universally accepted on the Islands that Hawaii’s state fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. How on earth do you say that?! Well, it’s really quite easy: HOO-moo-HOO-moo-NEW-coo-NEW-coo-AH-poo-AH-ah. Now, try saying that three times fast. If that’s too hard to say, you might just want to call it by its other name, the Hawaiian Trigger Fish. Whew, much easier. Roughly, its name means, fish with a pig-nosed face, which is appropriate given the fact that these funny fishes also grunt.

Believe it or not, Hawaii does, indeed, have an interstate highway. Now, you ask, how can an island have an interstate highway? Well, U.S. law states that federal highway funds can be used as long as the proposed highway connects military bases. Oahu’s Honolulu Highway, known to locals as “H1,†connects Pearl Harbor with Diamond Head, which used to be home to Fort Ruger. The first portions of the H1 opened in 1953, and over a half century later, H1 still enables locals and visitors alike to explore the beautiful island of Oahu. There are also interstates H2 and H3, which completed in 1997, has arguably some of the most beautiful views of any US highway.

When it began serving as a commercial airline, it initially focused on the Western United States. In 1969, it began offering service to Honolulu and Hilo with high end service which they called The Islander routes. During its prime in the 1970s and 1980s, Western increased service to Hawaii and also offered flights to Kahului and Kona. In 1986, Western entered into a merger with Delta Airlines, and the Western Airlines name was retired.

It is believed that the traditional hula, Kahiko, has been part of the Hawaiian culture since ancient times. Today it is much more common to see the contemporary hula known as ‘Auana. King David Kalakaua, revered as the Merrie Monarch, had a profound love and appreciation for the hula dance. He said, “Hula is the language of the heart, and, therefore, the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people.” Everything that one does when hula dancing means something. The face, the hands, the feet, and the hips all look or move a certain way, each playing a part of the larger story.
