Internationally revered in the automobile racing community, Bonneville National Speed Week is a prominent racing event that takes place over several days and showcases an assortment of courses. This event brings a diverse group of thrill-seeking car enthusiasts to the unique Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, U.S.A. Commonly known for its expansive stretch of salt, this historic venue came to be a phenomenon when adrenaline-seeking automobile lovers began testing the limits of their car speeds on the uniquely smooth surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Official races started in 1949 when the Southern California Timing Association and Bonneville Nationals, Inc. decided to organize a legitimate event. Drivers race in a diverse assortment of vehicles, from motorcycles and hot rods to streamliners and custom-built land-speed cars. The goal, of course, being to break an existing record or perhaps set a new one. Though it is a competition, there is always a sense of camaraderie as attendees and participants alike appreciate the impressive vehicles their peers have brought.

While snow may be the last thing you think of when you think about Hawaii, it does exist.  Hawaii actually gets snow on it's three highest Volcano peaks - Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Haleakala.  Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, standing 13,796 feet above sea level and it's name actually means "white mountain" in reference to its peak which is frequently covered in snow during the winter months.  Occasionally there is enough snow on the ground for snow skiing.  There are no chair lifts or ski lodges, so people will drive to the summit, drop off their skiers, and meet them at the bottom of the run.  The first recorded skiers on Mauna Kea were Dudley Lewis and his son in 1936 and skiing Maua Kea has grown in popularity over the years, especially after the summit road was completed in 1964.  There are very loose records of impromptu skiing contests being held there as early as 1948 with the popularity and participation of the contests beginning to grow in the 1960's.

In 1957 Half Moon Bay Airport became one of racing’s fastest, most attractive quarter-mile drag strips. Located just outside of San Francisco, Half Moon Bay Dragstrip, became the largest drag strip in Northern California offering bleachers, concession stands, a safety net, and a timing tower constructed from a bread van, to its many fans. Big name racers, including “Big Daddy” Don Garlits and Don “the Snake” Prudhomme, attracted enthusiasts from across the United States to witness the historical race in which Garlits pulled off an unexpected win though Prudhomme’s name had been etched into the trophy even before the race took place. Although racing stopped in 1969, the nostalgic memories of Sunday morning’s roaring engines, wild cheering, and buzz of adrenaline-fueled excitement live on in the tales of drag racing.

Academy award nominated director, Bruce Brown spent two years chasing summer around the world and capturing footage that set the standard for all future surf films. Faster than an airplane taking off at 177 miles per hour, a dragster can accelerate to 338 miles per hour which made York Airport in Thomasville, Pennsylvania a top notch venue for the York U.S. 30 dragway. The race track operated at this active airport from 1965 until 1979 and hosted some of the most notable events in drag racing. One of them being the 1965 Super Stock Nationals, nicknamed “The Woodstock of Drag Racing” after an astounding attendance was accomplished. This track attracted some of the biggest names in drag racing, including Dave Stickler of York who raced his revered Chevrolets from the Ammon R. Smith Autom Company dealership and Bill “Grumpy” Jenkins who was the Technical Director of the York track and later became a World and National Champion.

The famed Waikiki Beach Boys have been a significant part of Hawaiian beach culture since the early 1900s. Originally, the Beach Boys came into existence with the opening of the Moana Hotel in 1901, offering not only skilled instruction in canoeing and surfing to hotel guests but also an introduction to Hawaiian culture and a welcoming aloha spirit. In 1906, Edward “Dude” Miller helped to arrange a beach concession, offering the hotel guests a host of services to explore the beach and ocean. Many of the Beach Boys were pulled from the Hui Nalu and were held to a strict code of conduct including no drinking, no gambling, being clean shaven and keeping their hands off female guests. The Beach Boys also took it upon themselves to keep the beaches safe and clean for visitors and kama’aina alike. Situated in heavenly Hana on the windward side of the island of Maui, the Hasegawa General Store was founded in 1910 by brothers Shoichi and Saburo Hasegawa at the site of the current Hasegawa Gas Station. The brick store which stands today was built in 1958 and made famous in 1961 by composer Paul Weston who wrote the song “The Hasegawa General Store.” For over 100 years the Hasegawa General Store has been one of the few places to shop for basic items in idyllic Hana and is one of the only remaining family owned business on Maui.
